I know many are still searching for the chocolate basil, but I purchased the Lemon/Lime Basil seeds at Lowes. Do these taste like a lemon and lime flavor or do they just smell like it? So many basils...so much confusion!
Lemon Lime Basil
This basil does have a citrus scent to it. I have grown it for a couple of years now.
Interesting, I've grown Lemon Basil and I've grown Lime Basil. One wonders if they blend the seeds from both or are they a different cultivar all together...
podster - It says on the packet that it's a 50/50 blend of seeds from both.
I just was wondering if they really smell and/or taste like lemon or lime. I was hoping one of them would taste like it has a flavor to it like lime or lemon.
They really "smell and taste" like lemon lime. I must admit I prefer the lemon but the lime has a zing.
Thanks! I prefer the taste of lime so I hope I like that one.
They're definitely 2 distinct varieties.. I can tell the difference between the fresh leaves readily, but the seeds and chaff smell pretty much just like citrus... so last year when I lost the labels on 2 plates of drying seeds, I put together my own "Sprite Mix" of lemon & lime basils.
I got my lime basil at DeBaggio's several years ago, and for a long time didn't really see it anywhere else... but spotted those same Lemon & Lime packs at the box stores last year. Cool.
Tell me? What will happen when planted together and they both bloom. Where will the taste go? Lemon or Lime or other?
The lime basil seeds I found a couple years ago were Burpees sold in a large garden center.
I was at HD buying wood screws Friday morning and they had separate pkts of Lime Basil and Lemon Basil--not mixed. I think they were pretty cheap too, like $1.09. Since I had more of HD and Lowe's than I can handle for a lifetime after September, I try to avoid those stores.

Good thing about basil, you needn't buy those seeds but once.
Once you figure out which is which, you can let one kind bloom at a time (just keep pinching the other... but I'll warn you it's hard to keep up with pinching those, especially the Lime) and save seeds from those stems -- in essence, you're isolating the seeds in time rather than in space.
