Weather

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

High winds rolled in last eve taking down trees, poles, electric, etc.
Broke some glass on the glasshouse and ripped off the rigid front of the poly house.
Blew the hen house door off. They were all out this morning blowing around trying to get back inside.
Whatever else I was going to do today, I will be doing something else .. lol
But we are all ok :-)

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well Alice.. at least it was somewhat warmer .. I'll look for any stray chickens about here.. with the Gusts I'm having today.. they could easily have landed somewhere near by me.. The wind is over 40 MPH out there now.. My foam cool room.. which sits unattached up on the roof has been splended though.. it's taking the gusts which has everythng else quaking... with out a shudder or movment.. I'm more than a little amazed and impressed...
does this count for March comming in like a lion.. or do we still have that to look foward to.

Hey, Alice - I know you are exhausted, but give us an update as soon as you find energy and time. TTYS!

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Us, hens, ducks, and dogs are all ok :-)))
But it's been a lot of cleaning up today. Both greenhouses need repaired, especially the big one which completely lost both ends.
The glasshouse lost it's chimney cap which ripped through the glass breaking 5 panes.
Branches everywhere, but no trees down.
Winds clocked at 92 mph. I can't even drive that fast!!!
Electric was off for 15 hours due to downed treas, poles and wires which got all wrapped up on themselves, but now back on again.
Last night was cold, but not freezing like a few days back when it was 0º for which I am very glad.
I have a headache from the sound of the howling wind and pretty blown over from outside in the winds so much.
But all in all I am feeling pretty lucky :-)))
Thanks Everyone (((*)))

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

You will continue to be in our prayers!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, that must have been scary, too. I can't imagine the winds that high. That's hurricane type winds. I hope you are able to get everything repaired before the next cold wave comes your way. Will be thinking about you and hoping that you get lots of help to clean up and get things fixed.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Glad to hear you are okay Alice. Take care and stay safe!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

No Alice.. 92 MPH.. God... That's a hurricane [ 60 mph ] and a half.. all together..
Surviving .. good going... I'm awed..

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Gordon,
At the airports near me, one clocked winds at 92 and the other at 87.
They did say hurricane force winds.
It has settled today and I am glad. My ears are still hurting from the winds though )-;
We still have not found the round chimney cap that blew apart and broke the glass.
If anyone sees it rolling by, it is mine!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Alice glad you are OK. I know what those winds are, well almost, we had the terrible winds gusting from 40 to 70 miles an hour and it lasted about 7 hrs, lots of limbs down and some wires no elec. for almost two hours but no real damage around me for which I was very thankful.

Yikes Alice... and the cap is among the missing.. amaizing winds there indeed.. nearby me it was windier... might have been as much as 60 MPH there / here .. it blew down a large block wall they had made.. killing one of the construction workers there . I'd been monioring my cool building from inside.. .through the bathroom skylight..it seemed stable.. with all of the plants inside..holding it down.. no physical attachment to the building though.. about to go up and survey the results

Cumberland, MD(Zone 6a)

Alice, Sorry about your greenhouse, are the plants OK? We got the wind here too but it wasn't too cold It was at least 60 mph & blew the tarp off my 60 Chrysler Imperial & blew over (& broke) a big window for the greenhouse. I don't know how fast it was but those things were protected by our next door neighbor's house about 25 feet away & a 6 foot privacy fence 15 feet from the house & it got them anyway. Our electric was off all evening & came back on sometime after midnight just as I was about to light the kero heaters. I have my quail in a cage on the front porch with the brugs so I don't have to worry about those little bitty birds blowing away. The plastic held up even though it had to be stapled back down in a few loose places. Putting up 4 x 8 foam insulation in between really kept the plastic from flapping loose, the quail hate that (so do the brugs).

Linda.. Could you take a picture of the foam in the plastic for us.. I think it's something we should see also.. it seems to have worked so well...

Wow Alice! So sorry to hear about your weather!!!

I am glad everything is going well now. Glad there were no major losses!

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Alice, Sorry you had such bad weather. You might want to try a "Gordon foam GH". He has a thread about how to build one on this forum.
I plan on getting a foam GH like Gordon has.....only using a slightly different design to fit my hot Louisiana climate. I lost over half my plants from high winds ripping my GH up.....more than once. More recently we had snow in La!! All this was just too much for my tropicals. I'm more or less going to have to start all over getting most of my collections back, plus rebuild another GH.
Gordon's foam GH seems to hold up in strong winds.....that's just what I need here.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

The big greenhouse has a double wall acrylic that came with the package when we got it.
It was supposed to last a couple more years, but with my hot cloudless summers the last years, higher altitude air, and winter winds, they were starting to develop cracks.
These high winds tore them wide open. Right now that greenhouse looks a laugh held shut with boards, plywood, and scraps .. but doing the needed job for now.
I was pricing good double/triple wall today. Did not realize how much that will cost. lol
