How do you "Winter Snow" with 2' of snow on the ground?

Clinton, MA(Zone 5a)

Hello DG Buddies out there,
I had a question as I have seen people mention "Winter Sowing" and I wondered and these were members in MA and I wondered how one does such sowing with the large amount of snow/ice, etc. that we in this area received? I can't imagine sowing seeds on the snow, and would think that the soil must be frozen from the horribly cold winter before we got dumped on by heavy snows, right? Anyway, I will be (trying, since I am disabled) digging up some sod this spring, oh may that day come soon, and planting my first, non planter/window box-based garden, though I was the leader in a 1/8th of an acre plot last year that managed, in spite of the lack of volunteers to help and the torrential rains, to get 2,200 lbs of fresh vegetables/tomatoes/peppers/herbs/flowers to the hungry by way of the regional food pantry. Because this is my first garden and because I am doing the planning and designing for the other garden this year (last year, we relied on donated plants as we were able to get them, so alot of things got away from us, unfortunately) and would like to try using white clover as a "living mulch" for the walkways as illustrated in "Great Garden Companions," and she recommend winter or very early spring sowing, so would like to get the composted sheep manure into both gardens and do the sowing as early as possible. Thanks very much for your help with this!

Sincerely,
Thor

Winter Sowing is wonderful, but you don't do it on the ground, you do it in containers. Also check out the Accessible Gardening Forum! We need more people like you!
