Morning Glory, Ipomoea tricolor 'Heavenly Blue'
I bought seeds for this plant to grow on a trellis in my flowerbed, but before I plant them, just wanted to check and see if anyone else grew it and if I need to be concerned about it being impossible to get rid of. I really try to avoid invasive plants. It will be growing in full sun, if that matters.
Thanks.

You shouldn't have any trouble with it. I've grown morning glories for years and never had them become invasive. You might want to mix the seeds with some moonflower seeds. That way you have morning glories in the morning and when they close, the moon flowers open in the evening. The moonflowers are also fragrant.

Good to hear. I was actually going to mix the seeds with Twining Snapdragon (Maurandella antirrhinifloraandella antirrhiniflora), unless some one comes back and thinks that isn't a good idea. The trellis I have isn't huge, but it seems like these would be good. Actually, I may have some moonflowers seeds, not sure. Maybe I will check on that, so if those are a better idea, I can be ready!
Thanks!
What a brilliant idea crowellli, I have both the heavenly blue and moonflowers seeds. What time of the year do you plant the seeds. I know they don't like it too hot and saw some growing last year in the fall.
I think the Twining Snapdragon you have probably has much smaller leaves and blooms than the other one. At least, judging by the native Maurandella antirrhiniflora that I have, which is probably closely related. If too close to vines that have larger foliage and blooms, I'd be afraid it could be kind of covered up. A closeup pic of what I have here. I think it looks a bit delicate and petite. I have it growing more away from other plants.
I was a little concerned about that. I can put the morning glories somewhere else if needed. I was hoping to have two vines on these two trellis. Do you know of anything that would be better suited? I need something that stays 6-8 feet or so since this is not a huge trellis and I don't want to have to fight the size.
Thanks.
My favorite vines are out of contention when you put the 6 to 8 foot size limit on them. You can keep them that way, but it requires an ocassional "hair cut". I am keeping the Mexican Flame vine at that height by cutting it back once a year, so that might work for you. It's fragrant and is still blooming here.
I usually put the moon vine and morning glories in the ground in March. Do soak the seeds overnight in water first so they'll be more likely to sprout.
Another idea for a short trellis is an espalliered shrub, just for something different. I actually have a Little Gem Magnolia espallied against a brick wall in the front garden. The wall is about 6 feet tall. It does take a little maintenance each year to trim and tie the branches, but it's gorgeous when it blooms and the leaf color & texture is nice against the wall and sets off the bedding plants in front of it. There are lots of plants that can be espalliered. Just a thought.........
