Thought I'd share some pics of my babies from seed sown in Nov. These are episcias and others.
My Babies
Wow Gran! That's a lot of babies.Looks like they weathered the terrible storm you had just fine.
Lynn
Are the episcia seeds from a single plant (does that mean self? x) or had they been crossed? You have some nice little plants there. tish
they are all hybrids--not mine-- but from seed I got from Thad Scaggs via ebay and Gesneriad hybridizers assoc and also some other hybridizers.
I love baby pictures! Great growing Gran.
I love baby pictures of growing, too! Hi Jan and GRan!
just pot up that tuber & it will start to grow again, looks like it went to sleep.
bonnie
Thanks Bonnie!!
They all look great, HGran! Good growing from seed.
They look great, Gran!
May I ask what mix you used?
I used my wicking mix-1 peat 2 perlite 1 vermiculite-- with a little plantone added--but think it was too much perlite(cos the algae grew so well) --so going with a 1/1/1 ratio next time.
Think about it this way, Gran. If not for the extra perlite , you would have a much bigger problem than just algae.
Aw babies. They are so cute and look really good.
thats only 'cos you see the ones that lived;)
Gran you aren't supposed to tell anyone about them.
Wow Goldleaf! How many plants do you have?
Green with envy,
Lynn
Goldleaf, I agree with Lynn with WOW! That was a lot of work for sure. Neat idea to put them in a community box as opposed to all those solo cups. I am impressed!
very nice-- I haven't had much luck with strep seed-- I think I try to harden them off too soon
ibrabec, Compared to Gail, I don't have that many. I've never counted but gessies multiply like gremlins sometimes ^_^. The pots I sowed the seed in was so crowded and so I decided to plant them this way for a while till they grow bigger and need replanting. I felt bad tossing probably a hundred or more seedlings but I can only grow so many. I chose the biggest ones. I will have many more seedpods and if you would ever like to try your hand at growing streps from seed, let me know.
Thanks, Gail, the next go round with them will be individual pots.
That could be right, HGran. I kept the pot with the seed sown and resulting seedlings zipped up in a baggie. Then unzipped the baggie for a couple of days before I was ready to divide them. After planting in this community box tonight, I covered with plastic wrap. They will stay that way for a while and I will be in no hurry to uncover them. They need to adjust, root more and grow.
In June our violet club program is a show and tell on gessies. I'm going to buy some seeds from the gessie society for the ladies in my violet club to sow & grow. Could you give me any hints on what seeds might germinate faster than others? Thanks, tish
Jannich is a seed growing expert but I can't complain about the speed of these streps. Mine came up in about 10 days. The seed was good and fresh. HGran has showed us several varieties of gessies from seed on her thread here. How long did it take, Gran, for your seeds to grow?
Eucodonia germinated in 7 days, Kohleria in 9, Chrysothemis in 12, sinningia in 11-13, and episcia from 13-19.
Hillbilly_gran, where do you get your seeds from? I've been looking for chrysothemis plants at HomeDepot for months after seeing plantlady_lin's picturs of hers. I even tried looking on the web for seeds. Can't seem to find them.
Goldleaf,
Sorry I didn't see your post until today.Thank you so much for your offer of Strep. seeds, but I am not sure I'm ready for seeds yet.I remember how tiny and dust like most Gessie seeds are and I'm not sure I could deal with hundreds of little babies yet. ^_^.
Lynn
Okay, ibrabec, I understand. Anytime in the future...let me know.
Thanks,I will!
Lynn
