Foliage ID???

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I found a few of these plants popping up thru the leaves and pine straw today. Please ignore the ?chickweed?.

Can anyone tell me what I am looking at?

Does it favor poppies? I tried the LouC method of planting a few seeds and don't remember what all I strowed ~ sound familiar LouC? LOL

Anyway I know poppies were one of the seeds as y'all inspired me after reading the poppy thread in the TX forum.

If it is, I am excited!

They look like poppies to me. By the time I remembered I needed to harvest the poppy seeds last summer, it was too late. No telling where I'll have them this year.

Thank you! My fingers are crossed that they are!

A dear friend found these seeds in his deceased Moms' freezer. He is 72 and remembered her planting these yearly when he was 8-10 years old. I can't wait to see the blooms. In fact after he shared the seeds with me, I left them in a bag (not frozen) for 3 or 4 years now. This is my first planting.

Goody, goody, goody!

Now, what do I do next with them? LOL

Hey podster, let us know if they are poppies. I love poppies.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

They look like my poppies to me. I have them popping up around too, of course not where I wanted them. They do not like to be moved but very carefully I do it. These grow to large plants so will grow better if you thin them. Try to get as much soil/roots as you can and water well after you move them. Do this soon before they get much larger.
Do you know the color, I have the pink and the red. I sowed some in 4" pots in early Dec. but nary one up.....yet. Guess Maw Nature does it best.
Good luck, once you get them going you will have them forever as they reseed nicely.

I don't know the color and can't wait to find out!!! I will ask and see if my friend remembers what color his Mamas' blooms were.

Do these look like a cluster of plants? Or just one?

Do they need lots of water to bloom?

What time of year do they deliver blooms?

LOL ~ hundreds of questions here as I am clueless....

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I like them in any color. Some of mine come back as double blooms others single.
This looks like a clump of 4-5 plants to me. I would divide them out-carefully. Mine bloom in spring and do not need much extra water. They make a good sized plant and grow about chest high.

Cool photo ~ whatcha got blooming there?

What happens if I don't disturb these clumps of poppies?

well...since I'm a mear 19 miles from Tx. border,I'm gonna put in my two cents worth. Yup looks like poppies. I can only get the little gold calif. poppies to grow for me but I have seen the red(possibly Flanders) poppies growing wild in a fence row next to pasture.

I won't complain about your chickweed if ya don't say nothing about mine..*G*

Wrong photo, my bad ! This is the stinky voodoo lilly. Will try again on the poppies.
I guess if you do not divide them up they will be like other things that do not have room to grow to max. size. Hope for the right photo as it will give you an idea on size.

Here is the poppy close up. Not sure which type it is, friend gave me the seeds several years ago.

Forgot to say these photos were taken in April 08. So guess we can say early spring for bloom time.

Red ~ glad to see you here. I hope you join in with the TX forum more often. After all, I'm a former yankee and they are nice to me. At least you are closer to Texan than me! 8 ) Have got a nice crop of chickweed and cleavers already ~ ya want some?

DDE ~ thank you for that info. What a gorgeous bloom that is! Now, I really can't wait. I am uncomfortable about disturbing them at all. I don't always have luck transplanting and would hate to lose these before they even got started.

My friend said they tilled in cow manure before planting and didn't fertilize any more. Can you tell if the foliage is wilty when it needs moisture?

I did rummage around under the leaves and found a few more single plants. Another reason I don't want to dig them up. Seems I have some gardening assistants that love to dig where I have been digging. Sure would hate to KILL those guys ~ plants or pets! LOL

I think you are like me with so many trees that the leaves prevent the seedlings to grow. I never water mine and they do fine. They do play out when it gets a bit hotter. If I remember, I collect the seeds and try to keep pink from the red. I have not had much luck sowing in pots. Seems better to sow in ground in Oct. Remember where and try to keep leaves from covering them up. I have successfully thinned them out and replanted the little ones. They never seem to grow where we want them.
"Grow where we are planted "- I guess

I just noticed the poppy foliage yesterday! Woo hooo, spring can't be too far away!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I grew poppies last year for the first time. I received some small plants from a relative. They grew and bloomed but were not too big. I saved the seeds from the largest plants/flowers and sowed them directly this year. I have plants coming up all over the place. I too have noticed they like to be direct sowed as opposed to in pots. They definately need thinning. Fortunately I have enough coming up that I just yank the ones I want to thin and don't bother with transplanting.

I have three plants already this year that are over 4x larger than my biggest plants last year so I'm super excited to see how large the flower gets. I'm assuming that the larger the plant, the larger the bloom??

Here is a pic of my largest plants. I put my foot in there for perspective.

Wow! mine haven't grown that quickly and I'm impatient. LOL Want to see blooms, I understand these are red.

I gave up on all but the Calif poppies. Spidermites destory all others

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Uh ~oh. Now I'm going to be paranoid. All I want is one bloom...

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

I didn't have any spider mite problems on mine. They were in full sun pretty much all day, and were the big fluffy red and coral ones.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I've been watching my poppies pop up since around Christmas or so. Here are some in late January. I need to get out and take some more pics!

Exiting isn't it Stephanie. I think it was your poppy thread that inspired me to strow some seeds. LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL I think I still have about half of the small medicine bottle of seeds left that Sheila gave me. I threw them out in a couple of places and I gave lots to friends, too. Not sure what I'm going to do with the rest of these things! Wonder if they're the kind you can bake with??
