When I used to grow these I did nothing special, except keep them on a pebble tray. Now I keep my house much to cool.I have recently noticed pictures of them being grown in a clear bowl with a domed top.Does anyone know what these are called and where to get them?
Lynn
Episcia
When I use to grow these Lynn I got my bowls at the dollar store... If we lived closer I have a ton of bowls in my basement I would gladly would have given you... I did not have a lid on them...
Susan
Logee's has them, but they are a little pricey. I occasionally see them on ebay. As soon as my current episode of dementia subsides, I'll let you know the AV vendor that carries them.....
Thank you both.I could get away without lids if I do something to keep them warmer in winter.
Lynn
Lynn--another thought---You can get goldfish bowels at Walmart really cheaply--and you can cover them with any number of things.
And yes...I see my typo--laughed so hard--I decided not to change it! Must be nurse humor--LOL!
I just thought it was your 'dementia'...... talking.....LOL.
If it doesn't have to be a bowl, Target, think walmart too, have the 2 gallon jars with lid, real heavy clear glass - like maybe a cookie jar? I paid 12.99 I think, the 1 gallon were less. I grow an episcia in there, lots of room for it. Also I was given a large bubble bowl - the kind with no lid -then, during the holidays, I bought the frozen preshaped pie crusts and they were in a clear plastic pie shape dish that fit exactly on the top of my bowl..lucky me! tish
Still loving those fairy gardens Sally! There's a thread in the Northeast Gardening forum you might enjoy--Well Sweep Fairy Garden--Scroll all the way to the end for pics--worth the trip!
Thanks. There is a Tiny Garden forum here too! These are just Cleopatra Epecia, but I love to add fairies to them.
oh wow, i will have to check that out.

Thanks everybody.I love all the pictures and I get more ideas every day.I already have a lot of glass jars in different shapes and some have lids.
Lynn
Here are few nice terrariums (acrylic bubble bowls). Scroll down to see...

Sally, your jars with the fairies are delightful! Where can you find fairies like yours?
Goldleaf,
Those are exactly what I meant, but they are pricey, aren't they?
I don't know if you remember my post about a AV with unusual variegation.I went back and looked again and the price was $17.99,not $8.99,because you had to buy it in a Dandy pot.The one with the really unusual Palamino pony spots was a Cajun Popcorn sport and wasn't for sale.I knew there was some reason I came home empty handed...LOL.
Lynn
Mrs. Bonnie, here is the Tiny Garden area. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/tinygardens/all/
Goldleaf, here are two links for flower fairies and others.

ibrabec...yes, they are pricey. What isn't these days? I wouldn't mind having the bubble bowls but can't bring myself to order but I keep them in mind. Did you see those unusual violets at a nursery?
Thanks, Sally, for those links!
You're so right.Everything has gone up.Yes,they were at a local nursery. It looks like they are going to open up a Gessie section. The guy who runs it was not there, but I was told he is a member of the AVS and I saw trays of leaves starting everywhere. They also carry a lot of Orchids.
Lynn
Wow! That sounds interesting and could be dangerous ^_^.
Kent Stork, a well known Nebraska hybridizer, along with his wife Joyce, have a book on growing violets I see.

Thanks for the link.I wonder if that is Kent from Kent's Violets? That shop was right outside of town and I went there in the eighties.Another Nebraska hybridizer used to live a couple of miles from me,Mrs. Enghardt.I spent hours with her and when she retired she offered me a chance to buy her business, but sadly I couldn't afford it.She taught me a lot.
It is Kent from Kent's Violets. I know this, 'cause when I email Joyce, that's what the return "From" name is.
Syru,
Do you know if they are still in Nebraska?
Lynn
Yes, 'cause I asked her once if they travel to state shows, and she said they go to the ones in their "neighborhood". I was hoping she'd make it down to TX in November, but I guess we're not in the zone.
I can't provide a photo, as my camera is broken and I have not been able to replace it yet...
but I use the glass "bubble" style gold fish bowls, inverted upside down, over a Misco-brand pot
(the self-watering kind). I have a gorgeous episcia 'Unpredictable Valley' in this set-up
and it is very happy!
I will post a phot as soon as I am able.
Karen
Just looking back over the entire thread, and I see that Sally has one of the bowls
I am describing in her second post from the top. I have just turned it over on
rop of another pot.
Thanks,Karen.I really do want to get some of those bowls. When I used to grow a lot of Gessies I never even covered my Episcias and they did fine.I think I have just lost some of my confidence. When I was younger I just flew by the seat of my pants, grew seeds in old plastic shoeboxes or whatever I could find, crossed plants just for fun, etc.
Syru,Kents was in Arlington Nebraska in those days and walking in there was like heaven.Every plant looked show quality.Enghardt's Violets was right here in Omaha. Her ads were always in the AV magazine and also in some of my old books, like 'The Miracle Houseplants' 1976,but still a treasure.
Lynn
I also use bowls with a pedestal.

Sally, thanks for the links, i love the fairy gardens, thinking of making one also.
mrsbonnie
Gail told me once that episcias love to be misted-- She was right. I mist mine at least once sometimes 2-3 times a day and they show their appreciation.
Karen, thank you so much for the pictures.
Sally,I used to use those for my mini Sinns.Good idea.
Gran, they do seem to like misting, especially in winter.
Thanks all,
Lynn
Lynn--FYI: Cedarcreek violets has some of those bubble terrariums for sale on ebay--kinda pricey, but it IS Valentine's Day!!!!!
