I just got my income tax return, and guess what I did!

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

I spent $200 on rhipsalis cuttings from Bob smoleys. I've never ordered from there before, so I hope I did the right thing. It looks like he has so many unique plants though. I can't wait to get em!!!! I must be crazy!!! lol

If you are crazy then you are in good company with the rest of us nuts.

Let us know how it goes with your Bob Smoley's

Good for you. Great idea. I am thinking about ordering the smallest greenhouse possible, that I can put in my living room when I file my income tax this year. I saw one at the greenhouse mega store online for $420.00, or some tall enclosure that I can make myself. It must be cat proof. Then I can join your club if you don't mind. There is about $200.00 of plants including Orchid Cactus that I want to start with that won't have to hang from the ceiling. I can imagine the beauty that will surround you.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

I had a nice huge greenhouse that was destroyed by a tornado last spring. I had to buy something quick and cheep. I ended up buying one on ebay that is 7 ft wide by 15ft long by 6ft high for like $40 including shipping. It set up quite easilly too. Its a bit small for what I have, and its very crowded, but it seems to be doing the job....for now....lol. Anyways, you might want to check e-bay.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

Thankyou, I just opened up a e-bay account this week. You know with the $380.00 I could save from buying from e-bay, I could really do some heavy shopping. Wow! Thanks again.

This is why I log on quite a few times daily to DG.

Torriesmom Do you need a green house inside or do you just need a cat proof enclosure?

If you just need the cat proof enclosure then you could make it out of PVC pipes and either chicken wire, plastic or if to much sun light shade cloth. The have clamps that would hold the plastic or shade cloth own.

I really need a tall cat proof enclosure. I had thought of doing something with shower doors but did not get any further than that thought. I have plants that are getting expensive to keep replacing. A cat that will bring a cactus in her mouth to you, need to be protected. Then it is work trying to get the tiny spines etc. off. Ugh!. Any ideas will be looked at. I have been looking at the greenhouse forum but nothing there was helpful for my situation. You should see the heavy duty shower curtains. I can clip her nails, but can not do anything about those teeth of hers. Ha Ha.

Thanks for your help,
Torriesmom, Ivy

Ivy
look at my bench thread, you could build something like this and use the clamps to fastion the shower curtains to it.

Yes, I saw your pvc pipe shelves, benches and problems with the greenhouse etc. I have been following all of the threads. It all look great. I just could not see it in my head yet, since my vacation is not until the fall.
I work near a small Home Depot. I will run it by one of the workers there. Have to price the plexiglass or what ever you call it. I do have a variety of shelves so I will put it to paper and make something work. I am sure I can throw something together that is inexpensive. I do have tools (2 tool boxes worth). I don't have time to do much since I get home from work late at night.

Should get started real real soon. I just ordered 4 epi's and 1 cutting today for the first time on-line. Hurrah!.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Think in box form. You will have to send off for the right joints to use. But if you think of so many boxes and add them together it is no problem. The Plexiglass is the most expensive. Go to Homedepot.com and you can see the prices, just have fun figuring out what they have it under. It drives me crazy looking up items. You will either need a hack saw or the pvc pipe cutter.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

I have taken notes. Thank you for the ideas.

So Lismil,
What were some of the goodies you ordered from Bob Smoley's?. What were some of the unique plants that you saw?. Just curious. I will need to learn how to take care of my plants indoors. And something different or unique is right up my alley. It goes with my character.

Thanks,
Ivy.

That sounds like the rest of us also. LOL

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

I mostly ordered rhipsalis, along with 3 different types of aporocactus (I thought there was only one), some aporophyllum, and a few other jungle cactus. He seemed to have everything you could possibly think of. All kinds of orchid cactus, thanksgiving cactus, easter cactus, hoyas, tillandsias, bromeliads, cactus, cissus, desert rose, you name it, he had it. I just need to get a bigger greenhouse, and find another job right away after I loose mine, so that I can buy more from him.
His website is www.bobsmoleys.com if you want to check it out. He dosent have many pictures though, so you have to know the names of the plants you are looking for.
I'm going back to bed now......decided to call in sick today after I woke up feeling nausious.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

Well, I hope that you feel better soon. I will check out his website and try and get a feel of what I am missing and what I must have in the future. Thanks for the information.

Wow, It sounds like I really need to get busy and do my taxes. LOL I hadn't thought of buying cactus with it.

Darn, I do not get a refund. But then I no longer have to pay income taxes either.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

Well, I shouldnt have spent it on plants, as my company is closing its doors, and I'm loosing my job march 26th. I decided though, that I work hard for my income tax return, and that being that it's the only time I really get to spoil myself, I would only use half of it for paying bills.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Sorry about you loosing your job. I was downsized back in 97 after 27 years with Nissan. I was doing temp work will I upgraded my computer skills, unfortunately I get creamed in a car wreak.

Good luck of finding a new job.

Sandy

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

thanks! Its gonna be a hard time actually. My BF works there too, and he is loosing his job also. I have only been here a few years and have no family or friends here, and right about the time we get laid off, my BF will be sent to either Iraq or most probably Afghanistan. When it rains, it pours.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes I understant. It took me 7 years to get my disability, I was luck that I was able to live with my parents.

Check out temp work, sometimes it will turn over into full time. I do not know what kind of work you did but I was told that there was a high demand for Power Point and----darn my mind just went blank.

Lismil,
Remember when I asked about some of the goodies that you had ordered?. Well it gave me an idea to get started with my wish list. Fifteen minutes ago the the postman just dropped off a box for me. I am the proud owner of 4 Orchid Cactus potted plants, Flirtation, Moonlight Sonata, Southern Charm and Meadow Rose. Also bought 1 cutting called Ming Dynasty. I also have a order of Tillandsias that I will be getting next week.
What fun.

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

how fun! Where did you order them from? I just got an order with a dogtail cactus, a monkey tail cactus, and a stepeliad. I know they aren't orchid cactus...but...lol. I still havent gotten my rhipsalis order, and got an invoice saying it might be a couple months till I get it. I did order a LOT of rhipsalis though, and I have heard that bob smoleys is worth the wait on the order. I hope you have fun with your new orchid cactus and tillandsias. I love tillandsias also.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

Well, I ordered from Don Cravalho through ebay, as a new customer I paid with pay-pal. They seem a bit top heavy so I will be scouting for a little deeper not wider pot to put them in. They are labeled and have their names written on the large leaves. I could never get them mixed up now.
I came in from the Post Office just now, and my beautiful Beefsteak Begonias were in the box from Stovall Gardens found on the DG marketplace. There was a heat pack in there so they would not get chilled. They are in beautiful condition. Thinking of all the flowers I will have.
Needless to say, the house is under lockdown. I have booby trapped the areas where the plants are and it will work to discourage Torrie from making shredded greens with my plants. .
This is before my income tax money arrives. All I need now are my air plants, they have a heat pack added also. Then I will take a break after I find a book or manual on orchid cactus. Will be double checking DG threads for care etc. on keeping my plants alive, pest free and whole.
I am in heaven,

Ivy

My Meadow Rose that came recently, has a 1- inch bud, but I had to douse it with alcohol for a couple of days because of fat mealy bugs. So I guess I will not have a pretty bloom to show you for a while on this plant. I am soooo disappointed. Won't be able to save my bloom (thought I saw a pinkish color). I do have a couple of others though. What do you use for unwanted guests / pests?.
So I will have to buy or bid on a few more OC's to console myself. Right?. My tax check should arrive in two more weeks or so. I already did damage in anticipation of the money. I had received 2 more packages of goodies since my last reply here.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have had only one cutting with scale insects on it and I washed it with dish washing soap and some bug spray.

So sorry to hear about the lost of your but.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Will any dish washing soap do?. I also have castile liquid soap that is supposed to be used for everything. Would that be okay?.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I think it is just liquid soap added to the bug spray. I do not think it matters what kind. It makes the spray stick.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

This is my first bud. Yea !. I have been treating it, so far it is still attached. I wonder if it will actually bloom, it is getting a bit larger. It's now 1-1/2" long. How big does a bud usually grow to 3" or more?. I may just peel it open to see what's in there if it is not going to open at 2". Advise please.

The size depends on the plant type. Some are small and some are large.

Pawleys Island, SC

I think I would wait to see if it bloomed. I would hate to pull it off if I though it would bloom soon.

New York, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, you are right. It is definitely showing color on the edge of one of the closed petals now. It must be the most sterilized plant I ever had. No more mealy bugs for sure. I feel like a first time parent. Thanks.
