Anyone into Geocaching around Texas??

If you don't know what it is....here is the official website.

We just got our GPX last year and plan to do some traveling, and this adventure will be a lot of fun along the way. I am in a stall pattern right now will family illness, but plan to get out and do more caching soon. I have only found two so I am really a newbie!
Where have you gone and how many caches have you found?

My brother just got a new iphone and he is pushing me to get one too. Told me it has GPS and a button to push whenever you take a picture and it automatically does this caching thing. Thinkin' 'bout it.

Wow, that sounds so neat! What a great way to get people outdoors and involved. Thanks for sharing that interesting link.

It is kid friendly too for those who get out trying to keep them active. It is a no cost but entertaing way to involve the whole family. You just have to be careful to not let people see you finding the cache so they don't take it or move it afterward.
When you open one map and double click it will show all of the ones in the area too.

Thought I would bump this up to see if anyone else might chime in! I don't hunt as much as I thought I would since I do it by myself, however when my sister's Grandson is up we go out. You would be surprised how much gound we cover in an afternoon!

We have just started doing this, and have found about 4 caches so far. My daughter wants to get to 20, which is when you are allowed to create your own cache.

Yeah Dennis!! It is such fun for the kids especially! I have just placed my first cache and I am waiting on the review now. I have another waiting in the wings to place maybe this week. I don't get out and do it much because I don't have anyone to go with me. It is way more fun with friends. I will send you a Dmail with my id so we can connect on GC.

Sounds so fun, Sheila and Dennis. I've planned for a year to download the app, so I could hunt on horseback. I'm sort of like you, Sheila, don't usually have anyone to go with me. I've heard it's great adventure on horses.

Haven't heard about that, but I know hiking to them is very popular.

Have not done any recently but should have more time over the summer when it isn't too hot.

I had released two travel bugs in recent caches. I am tracking their travels and one a butterfly was picked up last by someone in the military that said they were headed to Germany! I put a lady bug tb out too, and it has recently been placed in a newly published cache in east Tarrant Co. The guy took it by Weston Garden and another place and took pictures with it before he dropped it. So it was in the hands of a gardener!

Question about iPhone GPS aps: I have iPhone 4s. I like to use it to take photos in cemeteries for FindAGrave memorials because it records the GPS coordinates on each photo file under "Properties." But... haven't figured out what I need as far as additional ap so when I want to go back to that same gravesite I can enter those coordinates and find it again. Seems like it would be similar to Geocaching, so that is why this caught my eye.

I know there are so many GPS aps for iPhones but don't want to try to weed my way through to the right one. LOL.

Sounds like you are on the right track for that Glenna. I don't use GPS on my phone, I have a stand alone one I use for geocaches, but some others do use their phones. My neice has geocaching.com app on her phone, I think she said it was $10 when she got it. You can plug in cords and it will take you turn by turn. I do the F.A.G. also because of another DGer, BluesMaven, you may have met Sherrill at a RU. I am on there as Sheila_FWTX so friend me. We may can take off together sometime for a day trip.

There is at least one geocache in every cemetery, I just went to Greenwood and they had three. One is a virtual cache (meaning just site-seeing spot) that is called "Turner Oak", a tree that was there at the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Charles Turner hid gold at the base of the tree in the 1800's and it was used later to reconstruct Fort Worth after the war.

Also David .....if you and your daughter get over to FW, there is also a virtual cache near there called "Alexander" she would love to see. It has been there ten years and is getting old, but hope they don't remove it. It is a fantasy sculptured creature and was done by the person that owned the home. You can get out and take pictures.

Sheila, since I posted to this thread, I learned about Billiongraves.com. They have a free iphone, ipad, (and the other type phone I can't remember name of) app that you can use to find graves. Also, use to take photos and upload to that site. Fantastic tool. Many cemeteries have already been completed with every last gravestone photographed and GPS recorded. When the weather gets cooler, I'd love to get together with you to record some cemeteries because I so appreciate being able to find graves in my genealogy research, etc.

@ Glenna...I saw last week or two that someone even has a list of geocaches that are in cemeteries. We could pick an area and I could download the coordinates for several. It would be fun. I bet the other would be android phone, might try to download it later.

Oh, and saving the gps location on geocaching is called a waypoint.

Austin, Maddy and I found our first cache today, Sheila. Out at Cope cemetary. We're trying to learn how to use this app I bought. Austin is the only techie one of us, but we're trying.

Yea!! Glad you are trying to get out there and see what the geocaching sport is about. If you have signed up on there, you can get it on your computer with the same login. You guys need to share with me what your id is and we can friend each other on there. Mine is ret2008duo. I had thought Herman would be interested in doing it with me at the time. Not...and it isn't much fun by myself, so I don't go as much as I would with others. So if anyone is in the area and wants to meet up and find a few, I am game.
