Cold crop planting, when?? NOW??

Weston, WV(Zone 6b)

I have a few things that are said to be grown best in early spring or fall like Michilli Cabbage and broccolli ... when do i need to start sowing them indoors for best results outdoors. I have searched all over the ne for info and all i get is maturity dates ...lol

Help, is it time to do this now or wait a few weeks??

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

I spent 28 years in the New River Valley (Z6) and planted cool weather crops in the latter part of March ( direct seeded) like English peas, beets, carots etc. Transplants like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower started in early March for transplant around the middle of April. Irish potatoes around the first of April.

Oh thank you for your helpful insight on this topic. I went to the farmers almanac site and things there for me are a bit complicated. Well more advanced language i guess i should say.

I did however find this site: http://growingtaste.com/calendar.shtml

It goes day to day what to do for zone 6 for each month, take a look and let me know what ya think! If you wouldnt mind!! I appreciate all the help!

I looked at it. They do point out that the term zone is useless for the purpose as it relates only to winter low temps. I have problems with thier time lines unless they are working in a sheltered coastal location. Broccoli and cauliflower will button if their growth cycle is interupted by a hard freeze. I start it here around February 1 but in the New River valley I waited until March 1. March 15 in Blacksburg, the ground was still frozen most years. On the other hand they are pointing at June 1 for green beans, which I planted around May 15. There are a lot of crops, which can be planted as soon as the ground thaws and gets dry enough and that is the best guideline. It is useless to shovel snow and makes holes in frozen ground with a pickaxe just to plant on a certain date. Warm weather crops of course you wait untill on or afetr the last average frost date.
