Window/Deck boxes

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm hoping all of you experienced flower growers can help me out. My mom lives on the Maine coast and she likes to have window boxes on her deck railings. We have had very little luck the past few years in getting anything to grow well. The problem seems to be the wind. Petunias get battered, geraniums won't bloom. It's a problem. Any suggestions would be great!

I have the same problem with my front veranda window boxes. Creeping Jenny which can take any abuse Mother Nature wants to throw at it, works great and is really pretty with is long trails of yellow flowers. Don't let it get loose in your garden, it can be very invasive. Low growing flowers seem to work best. Impatients, small marigolds, pansies, begonias.

Bluecow those are a really nice planter boxes. I agree with the creeping jenny and the other sugestions. The only other thing I can think of is maybe some of the low growing sedum or hens and chicks to fill in and support the annuals. Some have nice colors in the foliage and look nice even when not blooming.

Thanks ngam......I agree sedums are great and rather hardy. I have even used Goutweed and Ajuga as fill. Surround them with annuals and they look great and very hardy. You have to really make sure they don't get loose in your garden.

IMPATIENS NEW GUINEA TANGO - I did these last year in a container and the hail storm didnt even touch them. (did put some holes in the leaves). Coleus and Marigolds. This pic was taken in April so its not matured. (no pic of it in Sept of course).

New Guinea type impatiens are more adaptable than standard varieties - easy to care for, less bothered by pests and can thrive in much more sunlight than regular impatiens. Growing 10-14" high, Tango is an outstanding container plant and well suited as a bedding plant.

Schickenlady - I love how you are changing your "locations"! Brutal out there is so apt!
Although, we are up to 25F (blimey, a heat wave!)
