I'm sure I'm not the only one out there and a little off topic.
On Wednesday I went to work for 11 and was called into the Managers office and terminated after 32 yrs with the Bay. Yikes I was shocked as I thought I was too far down the food chain. I guess not. I know I'm not the only one.
So now I have some time to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life I am looking at two greenhouses who are just starting to hire now so I just may have a super spring. I hope not to spend more than I make.
Cheers-- One mans trash is another's treasure.
Ann
Who did you know at the Bay who is now a Stat.
Sorry about that Ann. After 32 years of dedication to a company, one would think there would be more consideration. Tsk. A sign of the times in this nasty economy I'm afraid.
Good Luck at the Greenhouses.. You know what they say, when one door closes, another one opens!
Ann, I'm sorry about the termination. Heard on the radio today that The Bay was cutting a lot. I hope that something works out for you with the greenhouses.
Ann
Thanks Ann and Don
I'm a bit up and down about it however I would have liked my retirement date maintained.
And now my life insurance is gone. Can't get insurance anymore.
Was having a tough time till I watched a Mom on Oprah and realized my family is all ok and my home is ok and why the heck was I defining me by my job anyway!
I tagged on to Lynn's volunteer at a greenhouse and got some greenhouse "lift me up gas" which is where one job opportunity came.
I will now have way more time to start some things and tomorrow I'm setting up the lights downstairs and will go and get my soil. Nothing like a little garden therapy even if the snow isn't gone.
Ann
Wow, after that many years they should have offered you something!
I lost my job early in Jan. So many companies are cutting back I'm wondering if I'll ever find another. I've decided that after 25 years of working I'm going to take advantage of some of that good old retraining money that EI has set aside, that I've paid into for so long.
Still thinking of moving to the Lower Mainland, Lee Anne?
(sigh) that bubble got burst...
Ah, too bad. But that is quite an undertaking to pick up and move such a distance. I hope all will work out for you in Ontario. ^_^
Oh boy I forgot about EI I guess I've paid into it too.
I thought there would be others out there with similar stories!
Thanks Lee Anne
Ann
you're welcome!!
Don, things'll work out, they always do!
Good Attitude, Lee Anne. ^_^
annabell52 I am so sorry to hear about your job loss. I can't even imagine what you must be thinking or feeling right now.....all I can keep thinking is that my head would be spinning!
You know - this is just a reminder that no one is really safe in their jobs....it is a very scary time right now. Thanks for sharing even though I know you must be reeling from this effect.......
I just pray that everything works out ok for you.....keep that chin up.....
Dawn
Thanks Dawn
It certainly helps to talk about it and in the long run there are a lot of other things that could be a challenge right now.
You and Lee Anne are right it's attitude that will keep my altitude high.
Ann
Sorry to hear that, Ann. Big business just doesn't have a conscience. You will do well to follow what you love, though. Let that big ole green thumb of yours lead the way. All the best!
Sandy
Ann - best wishes on your next adventure!
Joanne
Ann, so sorry to hear that you've had this happen. I hope they were able to at least give you a severance pkg. I would've thought 32 years would've been safe.Attitude accounts for so much. If I had the chance I'd be at work in a minute, but I'm on LTD for a reason. It took over a year before I could see myself as something much more than what my career defined me as.
Ah the smell of dirt, the excitement of getting those seeds started, the anticipation of this coming growing season. And to get a chance to work in a GH, that's just a bonus! I sure hope that everything turns out for you Ann.
Linda
Thank you ladies
It's amazing how after a few days time and talking about it things seem better.
I have a job interview on Monday morning which is for 24 hrs a week with benefits which would still let me do other things too.
Thanks for listening everyone.
Ann
Good Luck with the interview Ann. Knock 'em dead! ^_^
Sorry to hear about this Ann
But hey a 24 hours a week job would give you lots of time to garden!
Carol
That is what I'm thinking, so keep your fingers crossed that they do want me.
Ann
How did the job interview go?
So sorry to hear about your job. I resigned from a position a year and a half ago due to a policy I strongly disagreed with. It took me quite a while to realize that it was a good thing. You know they say when a door closes a window opens. I hope a fresh breeze wafts in soon!
Theresa
Thanks for inquiring guys. I am waiting for an interview for next week. I did just hear something disturbing and that is if I take another job before my severance is done they will take some of it back! Does anyone know about that?
Yikes!
I also talked with another " Terminated" person who only had 20 yrs service and he got exactly what I did. He thought we were getting 2 weeks for every year of service. I didn't get that at all.
I guess I will have to get council after all. I just don't know all the rules and don't want to make a mistake.
Any way I feel better and am looking for the other doors.
Ann
Hi All
Here is an update!
The regular folks at my old place held a dinner to celebrate my 32 yrs and I had 65 people come. Lots of tears and hugs and now I feel that I did make a difference! (no big wigs were invited so said the other folks)
Got the job and the folks there are amazing! I will be able to get benefits if I work an average of 20 hrs per week so that is a huge plus for my family and I ( I'm considered "non insurable" so I have to go to very expensive single coverage due to my Lymphoma) This new place bought a brand new computer and a brand new desk and chair for my spot. The ladies are fabulous and kind with my learning curve being pretty steep. You can teach an old dog new tricks.
I have asked my prior company to step up to the plate with regards to the two week thing and I won't be penalized for the part time work. Yippie!!
I just got some seeds in too so the soil therapy is starting too.
Thanks for listening to me.
Ann
Clapping my hands for you here Ann - what wonderful news! Congrats!
Joanne
Good news Ann. What is the new job?
So glad to hear things have worked out for you, Ann. I guess that new door did open for you; that's great. Good luck with the new position. ^_^
What a nice update. So glad for you, Ann!
Thanks all for the kind words.
I am now a part time Admin Assistant.
The company is called Alberta Traffic Supplies, soooooo when you see the barricades across the road with directions, think of me! I'm only in the rental division doing phones , data entry and customer service.
The ladies I work with are super de duper.
Ann
Congratulations Ann! A new life for you!
Am so glad for you Ann, particularly with your benefits. And time to ride AND garden.
Ginny
Ride again oh boy! Shadow will not know what the heck happened! I will actually be able to get all the weeds for a change too.
Thanks for the congrats.
Ann
Congratulations Anne - I am so happy for you. You know I do think things happen for a reason....maybe this change is just what you needed - who knows? Anyhow congrats again!!!!
Wonderful news!! So good to hear that good things are happening for some people.
Enjoy and thrive!
Thanks for the kind words. Things always look better after some time passes.
Ann
