Little Bernstein blooming

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

This is the smallest cutting I've ever had bloom. Bernstein is an aurea hybrid by Dorothea Langenberg. I wish I know who the parents were. Aureas are among my favorite Brugs. The bloom color is paler during winter. Here is what the blooms should look like earlier in the year.

The bud to the left of the bloom is also from a Bernstein cutting. The cutting is even smaller. I've raised the thermostat in the greenhouse to 50ºF this year and my Brugs seem to be healthier.

Betty, it's adorable. I LOVE the colour from earlier in the year! The contrast with the purple flower is incredibly striking!

I find it amazing that something so small could put out such a big flower. Yellow is one of my favorite flower colors. Just think of what it will produce when it grows up. :)

I have never seen this either! We are having a Seed Swap this weekend and I will, surely, bring this as a donation to the gift table. By the weekend she should be a lot further along.

Hi, Shirley!!!!
Good to see you around! Haven't talked to you forever!

If you remember, about 4 years ago, or so, I bought this variegated Brug in a 4" pot from a grower at a Flower Mart. I sent you pictures to ID it--and it was deemed to be "Peaches and Cream".....The man I bought it from called it "Peach Parfait".
Eventually, it was deemed to be a Maya b/c of the long calyxes of the blooms. So--Maya it is!
It grew HUGE last Summer but did not bloom until late October. By then, I had pulled the pot out of the bed and was cutting it all back so I could take it in my basement for the winter. You should have seen it! There were buds on EVERY stem-tip. All over the place! That really hurt! What a flush that would have been!
So--I had a lot of cuttings and now they are all rooted.

Look at the size of it last Summer! I blame it on a bit too much Dynamite slow-release pellets when I potted it up. I think it made a big plant at the cost of blooming.....

Here she is all cut back--what a sad sight!

BUT--half way into the winter--in full dormancy--she still produced 3 beautiful blooms in my dark basement....

Here are a couple of the blooms. I think there were 4 or 5 total.....Amazing!

Gita, different Brugs produce their "Y"s at different sizes. It may have taken your "Maya" until the fall before it produced its first "Y" and started to send out buds. The mother plant and the cuttings from above the "Y" should bloom earlier this year. That was a gorgeous looking plant last year. Congrats!

Betty,

It had "Y"'s before Fall! It had 2 VERY small blooming times (only a few blooms) before October.
I have had this happen to me before with my other Brugs. We have VERY hot and humid summers here--with NO respite at night. I don't think Brugs like all that 90* heat.
In October--the weather cools a bit and all the Brugs go "AAAHHHH"!!!!!! I have had the best flushes in October! The only one I have that blooms well all Summer is my Rose Souvelons.
When I had my Dr. Seuss (long gone--shucks!) it bloomed well too--but it was in a bed where I had good morning light until 3PM and then shade. It was on the east side of my house, and well protected. I think it liked that spot.
I would like to get a good, rooted cutting of the Dr. again. Anyone???? If you have one--please D-mail me.

Shirley,
You once had a double white you were going to send me. Remember--my "Species" died with that bloom-deforming disease of some kind. Do you still have it?

Thanks--Gita

I can sympathize with you on the nasty summer heat. We had a record number of days of very high heat this past summer. My Brugs grew very little despite regular feeding and watering. Almost no blooms except from my Audrey Hepburn and a NOID that was supposed to be Mountain Magic. Even though it was a small rooted cutting, it produced one or two blooms at a time, but through the summer into fall. She bloomed in the greenhouse and produced a pod with a pollen parent that could have been Vixen, L'Amour or Inca Sun. I was hoping to see that pod go to maturity, but I suspect a rabbit has been getting into the greenhouse and eating the leaves and young stem on some of my Brugs. It also ate the little pod.

Here in Texas, Brugs need protection from the hot noontime and afternoon heat. My Dr. Seuss has a small new shoot coming up from the ground. You can have it later this spring if you are willing to wait until at least part of the stem matures so it has a better chance of rooting.

Here's a photo of the NOID that bloomed despite of the oppressive heat we had.
