Hey! My question is who's breaking all the eggs, DEACON? How convenient! He looks very guilty to me. LOL Haystack

Who could resist those eyes! I may drop a couple for him myself. :-)

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

That is funny!!!! What a ham. I think that is definately curious how eggs get broken everyday! hmmmm...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

So funny! Our dog Stickley eats them cooked, but not raw.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

Raw eggs aren't good for dogs, btw. There's a substance in the albumen - the whites - that prevents the absorption of biotin if eaten raw. I don't think there's a problem with raw yolks, but we either fry or poach eggs for our dog. Of course, yesterday she did find an egg in the yard that was left by a cuckoo maran hen who is turning out to be a real escape artist. Usually they lay them safely in the henhouse. Our pup got quite a talking to but the deed was done by then.

They'd have to eat an awful lot of raw egg whites though to bind all the biotin they are getting from other sources, not to mention there's biotin in the yolk. So a few raw eggs here and there isn't going to cause a problem.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

Probably not a few, but if they're given them on a regular basis as some people do they should be cooked. We give our dog eggs when one is cracked or if we have lots.

I didn't know that dogs can't have grapes, and we used to give our Great Dane the skins after we ate the innards as we stood around in the grape arbor. Luckily nothing happened to her, but I've heard of dogs dying from raisins or fresh grapes! And then there's chocolate...

I guess milk chocalate is ok but the dark chocolate is a no-no. No problem here as I'm a huge chocaholic so the dogs won't be getting any from me! lol

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

I never heard that milk chocolate was okay, but I have heard rumblings that white chocolate might be. I think the main danger is a dog getting into it unintentionally - like scarfing up a whole box of Oreos that a kid left out on a coffee table!

Speaking of no-nos, Hobby Farm Magazine mentioned that coffee grounds, tea leaves, and bananas aren't good for chickens. We have always fed them those things and have never noticed a problem. Have you all ever heard of that?

The only thing we don't give them is citrus.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

That was an interesting article on using the chickens to aid to composting. It was the first time I had heard of it.
Dark chocolate contains alot of theobromine which is toxic to dogs. Here is a Wikipedia site: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_chocolate_harmful_to_dogs

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I've also read chickens shouldn't have avocado.

White chocolate should be OK I think because it doesn't have theobromine in it, but both milk and dark do, although dark has it in much higher quantities.

MY CHICKENS WILL NOT EAT BANANA PEALS GUESS THEY KNOW SOMETHING I DON`T.WHY CAN`T YOU GIVE CITRUS?

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I think it was in the sustainable alternatives forum? Someone was talking about dogs getting sick from chewing on the mulch they make from cocoa husks.

edited to add it was the Texas Gardening forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/949607/

what about citrus? I give mine lemons, oranges and grapefruits all the time. They love them. They love avacados too. I slice them open so they can eat the insides.
No one has ever gotten sick. Hope I am not doing something to hurt them. That would be awful and how does everyone find out if these things are bad for chickens? Who did the testing? Is it just hearsay? I don't know? Who am I? Who are you? Why are you in my kitchen?

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

Isn't that weird? Ours won't eat citrus. Maybe I should try again since we have a totally new flock by this time.

I checked with a friend who's a vet - we were cutting up a deer together yesterday - and he said that milk chocolate isn't good for dogs either. Of course they'd have to eat an awful lot, but it's not worth the risk.

My dog loved eggs. He would go in and get his own (yes, we allowed it). It was so cute, he'd go in to the chicken house, and the chickens would be furious. He'd duck his head, and squint his eyes, but he'd find that egg. He carefully carried it out, and dropped it on a paving stone. Then he neatly cleaned the whole stone, and left just the shell. I will sure miss that when we get new chickens :(.

My Florida chickens wouldn't touch citrus, either, They free-ranged under orange, grapefruit, Tangelo and key lime, but never touched them. Tomatoes, OTOH, they would kill for.

I always kept the avocados picked up, because I'd worked with parrots, and had always been told they were poisonous to birds. Reading the entry in the Merck Manual, they say that chickens and turkeys are more resistant to the poison.

Here's the entry, if anyone is interested;

InnBetween, I'm in your kitchen to make sure you have a tin foil hat on your head...

I found a list somewhere of what not to feed poultry but I have no idea where it is. I will post it as soon as I find it.

remind me guys and I'll put it on the reference thread...

Found three! The third has pictures, and makes it clear that it's the skin and pit of the avocado that can be toxic, so I guess the flesh is all right. Like peaches, I guess -- we can eat them except for the pit.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Now I have to say, OH MY. The area I penned in has a wisteria growing up the fence. What should I do? What's the probability they'll peck at it if they have plenty of other stuff?

Clarkson, KY

Fairly low I would think...but YUK. Most critters stay away from stuff that hurts them as long as they aren't starving but...Do you already have them in there?

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

A neighbor found his chickens dead in their coop, no injuries. Thinks they were poisoned because he found some bread inside the pen...he didn't put it there. They aren't allowed out in the yard because of predators in the area, has their pen well-fenced, pretty secure. Anyone had something like that happen?

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

grow, I haven't gotten them yet.

Linda, SOMEBODY put that bread there. What a shame.

Brookville, PA(Zone 5a)

my girls love bread and popcorn and all that good stuff..never had trouble with bread, so something else might have poisoned them..they will kill for lettuce and especially watermelon!!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Do you think the bread was laced w/ something? I would be heartbroken if I found my girls like that.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

He thought so. How would the bread have gotten in there, other than a human? If an animal broke in, it would have killed chickens, not left bread for them. They were like pets to this guy! Egg-laying pets...he was so fond of them. I want to get chickens later when we can put something up for them. But now I'm afraid to do it. Many years back, another neighbor's dog was found to be poisoned, probably because he let it roam around the neighborhood, although there's still no excuse for such a horrible act.

Newton, AL

Man, that is awful. I hate to hear when people do things to animals. Makes me madder than politics.

Clarkson, KY

Ugly. Wonder if he'd had any complainers about chicken noise etc...?
