Puddling Areas by Ponds?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Has anyone incorporated a puddling area on the edge of a pond? I'm looking for visual examples of this. So far I've only come up with a picture of some on a rock with water around it. I would think that the water would be rich enough from a pond. I'm wondering if some shallow rocks in a bog area would do the trick. OR, maybe I should use the method of sinking a plastic container with sand and compost, etc.

I was thinking of attaching a saucer from a pot onto a 3' pole and putting the same stuff in it. We get some pretty good downpours in the late Spring and Summer here....
I saw that they even have a butterfly feeder now...have you ever tried it?

Here's a couple of Eastern Tailed Blues...the pic is terrible, but we got a new camera since it was taken...

oh well you know, those ET blues are really hard to photograph anyway.

I saw lots of ideas on this forum for puddling areas, but unsure of what to do with a pond I'm going to install. Pebble beach vs. bog area, vs. just a container over in the butterfly garden. I'm putting in a pebble beach anyway for the birds, so if they like it there, that's cool. Might be too much shade by the pond anyway. *shrug*

No matter where you put it, post a pic! I'd love to see the area/bog area and all...sounds great! You're right about the shade part though...maybe there is a particular spot that gets the most sun?

Anyhoo, need to get off the pute and get some chores done...Grrrr. the laundry and dishes are calling me...LOL
Have a great day!

Come to my house when you are done!

Well I'm putting in a new butterfly garden in the sunny area, so perhaps It will just be there next to the brew station. The pond area only gets a few hours of sun in the front. I had some flowers there this year that did reasonably well, but the butterflies rarely came to them since it was not super sunny.

Oh, yes, I've seen those butterfly sugar water feeders. Never tried one. I think I might rig up a plate with sponge instead.
