On the ranch I have 3 broken clothes washers, and am wondering if I can use the tubs as containers to plant some tomato and Herbs and maybe flowers?? Are the holes an issue? If so what do I use to plug them up?
Thanks in advance
I have 3 broken washers can I use the tubs for a garden?
I don't see why you couldn't use them. I get protein tubs for my cows and I plant stuff in them. I wouldn't plug the holes but I would put something like gravel or broken clay pots over the holes to allow drainage but to keep your dirt in, unless the holes are huge. I still wouldn't close them up all the way. I don't think I know how big those holes are. lol Last year when we potted the protein tubs we missed drilling holes in two of them and we collected rain water. lol It wasn't good for the plants. lol
I too have a broken washer we were going to haul to the dump. What a great idea, I may have to try that myself.
Well I figure I cant lift the washers in my truck the way they are by myself, so I figured I would break them down. Then I was looking at what I could reuse and the tubs came to mine. I am going to make one an outdoor firepit, and plant herbs in the other two if possible. I have to look again at the holes that are in the tubs..
I would be interested in how you are going to make a firepit out of one. The one I have was dumped off the back of a truck when we moving it from place to place so mine is already torn down. lol
Are you just going to put the wood in the bottom? Please share how you are going to do this.
The holes in the wash tub are only 1/4th inch holes and if your grow mix contains enough peat or cocanut coir, it shouldnt wash out. The holes in most nursery pots are larger than 1/4 inch so you should do fine with the wash tub. It might pay to put screen wire or ground cloth in the bottom so pill bugs, ants and other varmints cant crawl into your grow mix.
Old wash tubs were in great demand for building campfires back when I was a member of www.lonersonwheels.com. That is an all Singles organization who live and travel in RV's. Lots of campfire stuff in that organization and seems like someone always showed up with a washtub for the campfire.
