I bought some chives seeds today and I'm glad I did. Easy to grow, perenniel and very nutritious.
I had no idea the chives were so beautiful when in bloom, either.
Here's a link I found about them, there are some recipes included on other pages here, too.
It's another easy to add item that continues to produce and requires very little space.
Maybe chives is an herb and not a vegetable?

Growing Chives
I think chives are considered herbs. I love to grow them and use them. I have chive plants scattered all through the raised beds where we grow veggies.
I like garlic chives too. They have a flat leaf and a great flavor. Also beautiful blooms :~)
The only thing I have a problem with is our free range chickens. They seem to like chives a lot too - Grrrr - LOL!
Whoops! I guess I posted this in the wrong forum.
Oh, so chickens like things that taste oniony, too, I didn't know that. I've got mine up on top of a wall so the rabbits and gophers won't try and eat them, if they like them.
I just discovered the garlic chives after I already placed my seed order, looks like I need to place another seed order. I keep finding all these wonderful things and I want them all. :)
I have tons of garlic chives and highly recommend them. They are very tasty and are used in Chinese medicine for colds and I don't know what all else -- eggs in particular. Also pork buns. I put them in omelets and scrambled eggs and gorgonzola sauce for pasta. You will eventually want both -- but garlic chives can be a bit invasive. Not too bad here.
Thanks, pajaritomt, I'm putting everything into pots, so that's not a problem. I'm going to order some tonight, been hearing nothing but good things about the garlic chives.
Garlic chives are one of my favorite veggies!! Great in stir-fry!!
I love chives. They're great in sandwiches either on their own or with cheese. Incidentally I find that the finer you chop them up the more intensive the taste. They thrive here even with temps below minus thirty celsius.
can i grow chives in a little 4 inch container maybe. will one plant be to big for that size. just want to try them. thanks
I suspect that they will work fine in a 4 inch container, but you might to do more than 1 4 -inch containers if you like them. Chives are vigorous growers and as long as they have sun and water will put up with almost anything.
sorry for the late reply. i have plenty of 4 inch containers to try.thanks again
My chives are poking their heads out now. :)
And so are a bunch of other green type things I've planted. There's 36 pots and growbags outside now. 9 have tomatoes. I hope the frosty surprise cold is over once and for all. I'm ready to get going!
You California people are so lucky! We have 15 degrees F.
Don't worry paj, the climate is just about ALL this state has going for it right now! LOL!
When can you start planting things like tomatoes?
May 15 at the earliest. Pretty sad isn't it. That is our average last freeze date. Even on May 15 you have a 50-50 chance of getting frozen out. I usually wait a week or two later. Our summers are wonderful, though. Cool and bright. It's just that winter is so long. I have been hearing about all of CA's financial problems lately. That is pretty sad. New Mexico is in pretty good fiscal condition but is very backward by most Americans' standards. We are fairly advanced compared to Mexico, though. Poor Mexico. It is a wonderful place but is having even more trouble than CA right now.
I put 'maters out early here last year with bottomless, lidless milk jugs over them. It was enough even with a late frost...
Maybe my neighbors could save me some milk jugs. We don't drink milk.
You can also use the 2 liter soda bottles, they work fine, too. Or anything big enough to cover the plants.
I've had tomatoes outside for a couple of nights now, the temps are flirting with freezing, 36F etc. I'm a little nervous about putting them out but some have got to go! Not enough room for all of them.
The temps are around 70 for the rest of the week.
Seems like thing are peeking out of the pots but not bursting with energy. I guess I'm too impatient.
Well. Water jugs, technically...there oughtta be sumpin' somewheres...
I bet I can find some jugs, but first I must plant some seeds. I have some indoor space but I will have to plant in several waves -- that means some will have to go out under some sort of protection. It is so early here, that I am only beginning to think about it..
