I planted 2 rows collards and 2 rows onions in the one half, and am preparing the ground for spring planting in the other half. The dirt was already good, one end was sandy where there was an above ground pool once but I've mixed dirt from the other half in with it, that's where the onions and collards are.
I made the rows, then put leaves and other organic matter in between them. The 6 rows that are not planted yet are going to have pole beans, squash, peppers, and tomatoes. I have the bed divided in half with perpendicular rows because I wanted more options as far as the angle of the sun. On the left out of the frame there is a large oak tree, I have to account for that when I plant. The area gets a lot of sun in the summer, not sure exactly how many hours and when those hours are though.
This shot is a current overview. You can see one of my compost heaps in the back!
pics of my garden, it's coming along
Here is a closer shot of the end where the collards and onions are planted. I got the plants from a local store, I wanted to get started with my garden so I got them. I'm not sure they are getting enough sun right now but they havn't died yet, and they seem to be growing. I'll have a better idea next year what to plant and when.
Here is a close up of them. They get a couple hours of direct sun a day right now, and there is clear sky overhead so they get the reflective light, for whatever that's worth. Not only do I have the oak tree, but there are a bunch of tall pines that aren't really that close, but the sun has to get pretty high to get over them. Of course all this changes in the summer. It's changing right now actually, I can tell just from a few weeks ago.
looks good marg...i've got collards, beets, radishes, turnips...just planted some onions today...glad to see what others in our area are doing this time of year...virginia
Nice garden !!
Ok wow! So jealous right now. Climate and at how much space you have. It looks wonderful.
lookin' good!
=)
do you have to fight that turf grass to keep it out?
I just made it and the grass is dormant. I mulched heavily so I don't think I will have to do much fighting. I'm not expecting it to get out of control if I keep it up, my flower gardens aren't that bad.
The collards really seem to like this cold weather we've been having, they look a little taller and floppier today! And when I went to put my kitchen scraps in my compost heap (not the one pictured) I stuck my hand in to mix it up and I felt . . . . . warmth!!! Somewhere in the middle of my heap compost is cooking!!
It looks great, marg! Happy gardening!
Your garden looks really nice.
Gosh, I'm green with envy, We haven't even disked up ours yet. We still have the whole month of FEb for freeze warnings, and we get a pretty good major frost on Easter Every year. It's frustrating, I can't put out any warm weather crops till after easter, and they have them for sale the middle of march at all the local places to buy plants.
Yours looks good. You must get warm weather right now?
All your work is beginning to pay off.........keep the pictures coming!
brigidlily, taters looking good. I plan stickin' my little reds in the ground on Valentine's Day. I know it's late but I am a little behind schedule with the garden fence. No use planting as long as deer have access to the plants. I'll go ahead and plant the taters this Saturday cause the fence will be finished by the time they come up.

great pictures everyone. i will be starting my hot peppers very soon.
Not much going on except the few things I have planted and preparing the other half of the garden. It's all getting a lot more sun now and the collards have taken off. I got some free compost from the county and put it in my next unplanted rows. I put gypsom, some 10-10-10, some iron, and lime under the compost. I still need to fill in between the rows with more mulch. I wish I would have made a larger bed. I might add a raised bed later instead of expanding the current one though. Here is a new pic.
