Question

This is my frist time dealing with Brugmansia's.So how big do they have to be to start growing buds and blooming?

I know you'll get more educated answers, but just had to share that I received a cutting for a Dr. Seuss (I think) last Nov., had it rooting in water and it bloomed while it was still in the water!

WOW!!!!It bloomed that small.I have about 20 or more some or the same. All my are in pots right now.But WoW!!!I can't wait for my to bloom.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Apparently that is pretty unusual. I wish I had taken a pic before my daughter accidentally knocked of the bloom. If I had known it was unusual, you can bet I would have taken a pic! If you've done any reading on them, you probably already know that they bloom above a "y". OK, that's about the extent of my brug knowledge! I'll be interested in seeing how the professionals answer your question!

Yeah,i have but i'm still waiting on my Y.

TheRoseGirl,

How large a Brug must be before it blooms depends on the origins of the cutting. If the cutting you received came from above the "Y" on the mother plant, the new growth will continue to "Y" and produce buds. How soon depends on the cultivar. I have had blooms larger than the plant itself. If the cutting came from below the "Y", the new growth must grow vegetatively up to a certain height, only then will it produce a "Y" and bloom. How tall it gets before it produces that first "Y" depends on the cultivar. Some can get up to 7' tall before they "Y". There is little you can do to change that height. You can help the plant get there faster by fertilizing it regularly when it is growing actively starting early spring.

Thanks Bettydee,i will just have to wait and hope it won't be long.

All the rooted cuttings you received from me were from above the 'Y'.

Here is Bonnie Jean.It is a very beautiful dark, pendant, pink.It was first grown by Kristy Thornbaugh and named for her sister. The plant grows fast and grows to a very large size.It was always thirsty at my house.
Kristy....if you are listening... sorry for butchering your last name.

To be honest RoseGirl i do not remember what else i sent you. I only know that all my cuttings nowadays are made from above the 'Y' only.

This was the last flush that Rosamond put out. She sets pods easily. I got 8 pods from that flush!
