Cestrum diurnum

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Is this fragrant or not???

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Yes it's fragrant....it smells like a warm cup of hot chocolate to me, it doesn't waft like the night blooming jasmine though.

Ok thanks. I had been told the smell was something like chocolate I hope it is fragrant in our dry weather.

I like it...but you do have to be rather close to enjoy its scent

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I used to have one and you could smell it even with the dry climate, but as everyone else has said you need to stick your nose near it to enjoy it.

I love mine but do notice it more on humid days.

Heavinscent, wow your's looks amazing....how did you get that many blooms? Mine's in a pot...could that be the reason? I bet you really would notice the scent with that many blooms. That's just beautiful. I'm so embarrassed to show my little puny plant now...LOL

LOL Samantha...I can post a pic of mine which should make you feel MUCH better. Mine was getting so leggy PLUS dropping all but top leaves...if you can only imagine.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Mine are in the ground and I keep them trimmed back so they are more bushy. They must like it because they bloom heavily after I trim them. I also don't let them go to seed until very late in the season if at all. Regular water and fertilizer thats about all...

I think I'll take your lead Caren - when it gets warmer I'll cut mine back and try to root the cuttings to share.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Mine rooted pretty well in willow water Chantell.

Now that's good to know. I just get nervous pruning and rooting when the temps are still cold. Yes, I'll admit it...I've yet to cave and buy a heat mat yet...LOL

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

How big is your bush Heavinscent? I wouldn't mind putting it in the ground but I get nervous that it's going to get big....I have a little backyard...well not really what you'd call a backyard, more like a stretch of grass LOL.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

You can keep it trimmed to a manageable size This is the second year for mine and its about chest high. I think that is about how tall I will keep it. Just right for trimming. Much taller than that I would need a ladder. I cut mine back heavily to remove the frost damaged branches and then to even everything out in spring.
Chantell, I set my cuttings to root in cake pan thingy from the bakery section at Wal-mart it has a black bottom and a clear plastic top that clicks in then I set it on top of my fridge. It puts off just enough heat to help the cuttings along. Like I said... Im cheap so I have to find a way lol!

LOL I'm jealous - I still need to place that order...probably this week. Just remember to keep that dang Cestrum watered...mercy they're a thirsty plant.

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

hey Chantell, sounds like your cestrum smells better than Stinky Pete. :)

LOL - you and your smells, Joe!!! Poor Stinky Pete has a bad rep

Well I received mine yesterday and ripped out a plant to so I could plant this one. My sweet almond verbena arrive with a flower and oh my it smelled so good. I also now have two of them. The one I thought was dead is alive and well . I swear I need to make some kind of list so I quit making duplicate orders.

How sad is THIS - I actually dreamed I was visiting a nursery w/DG friends and came across the sweet almond verbena in bloom. Please tell me someone else actually dreams about plants - I really need to get a life. LOL

You are not alone!! I plan any trip even a day trip up north around plants. My family knows if we go east towards one of our lakes that we will stop at my favorite nativ enursery, I will buy some plants and they will be babied ( kept from the hot sun) even if it means they have to sit on their feet so I can put them on the floor). :o)
