I got a rescue bunny!! Butterscotch finds his forever home!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Well, I finally was able to pick up Butterscotch this weekend. He is a rescue rabbit from the Animal Rescue League who was dropped off by someone who said they could no longer keep him because he had "grown too large for his cage." I could express a great many thoughts about that, but I won't, because this is a positive and happy post! Suffice to say, Butterscotch had not been properly cared for in his previous home. His beautiful fur was matted and dirty in places, and he was not at all well groomed.

After his neuter operation earlier this week, the shelter offered to shave him for me! Ack!! NO!!!! Butterscotch is an angora rabbit, and will thus provide beautiful fiber for me to include in my spinning activities. Although his coat was matted in places, there is plenty of good fiber on him now.

I bought a comb for grooming him, and began the process this weekend. He needed it BADLY! Tons of lovely angora hair is coming out of his coat. There are areas that are too matted to comb, and I will have to cut some out, but over the next week, I will work on his coat in small increments, to try to save as much of it as possible. He is primarily white, but with soft grey ears and some color around his eyes. He is a very handsome rabbit. I believe there is some light caramel color to the fur on his back. I hope it's not just dirty!

He is very good natured and tolerates the grooming perfectly. Even when I pulled on the fur a bit, he was very gentle. He is settling in to his new cage, but he'll get lots of time outside of it as well. I was a bit worried about what Stickley, our greyhound, would think. Fortunately, he appears not to care in the slightest.

Butterscotch is so cute. My niece is so jealous!! hehehe
Cute video. Butterscotch is fast!!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, WOW! The Popular Farming series on goats has instructions on how to prepare goat fiber for use; would rabbit fiber need the same treatment? I would assume angora would felt just like mohair or wool?

(Touchy subject with me as I knitted a gorgeous sweater out of manos del uruguay yarn and turned it into felt... grrr...)

Clarkson, KY

Now that's the stuff Disney made into dancing mops and animate slippers...and you both sounded so sweet...:0)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Well, after much grooming, I finally had to give Butterscotch a haircut. The mats were soooo bad in his fur and they were pulling at his skin. I felt bad for him and I couldn't work them out with the brush without really pulling at the hair. It was too bad. So, he's very short haired angora right now. He will grow again of course. The interesting thing about trimming him was how much color he had in his fur deeper down closer to the skin. I am excited to see how his coat will come in now that it is being groomed properly.

I think he's embarrassed that all the other rabbits out there will laugh at him.
