cranes and cows

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

This is a corner that UF has some cows on. This corner has looked like this all my life, these birds come every year. All around the corner, apartments cars and neighborhoods, but the corner and the cows and cranes, stay the same. This corner is maybe a mile from Paynes Prarie. They leave at night and come back in the day. Im thinking they go to the prarie.

I wish I had a zoom, these are not small birds, notice the cow laying down, and the bird next to it.

This one was of particualr interest. It stood there on its one leg and supervised the picture taking, it never moved. All the while, not one other paid any attention, or could have cared less about the camera activity. I can only figure it was the lookout, and if it felt danger, it would alert the others.

They have some pretty colors going on on the side, I wish the camera got the real red of the head.

Not sure what they eat, but they eat constantly, Very long beaks and they stick it all the way in the sand

I'd love to see these in person. They're so pretty. I enjoyed all your pictures.

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

How neat that you got such good pictures of them. When they migrated through this part of Florida in November I raced up to Florala to see them in person. They are HUGE birds. Like your photos, they were out in the field during the daytime eating and one of the locals told me that they go into the shallow water at night to be safe.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

What an interesting group...never would have thought! :)

Thanks for the great pics!
