HELP!! Goat had a kid, then stopped. Don't think she's done!

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

Hi all! My dairy goat, Black Beauty, kidded Saturday morning and had one kid. Since then, she has remained with her tail up and her hips tilted. The right side of her belly is hard as a rock still. I went in manually, as far as my hand would fit, and couldn't get any farther. I mean, I got 'in there' and couldn't go forward any farther, or down, where I think I should have been able to feel another kid or an empty space in her uterus. As I didn't have anywhere else to go, I'm thinking there is a kid right there, stuck. Does anyone know what else I can do????

Thank you for reading this,

I think it is time to call a vet.

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

Crud!! Yeah, I've been thinking that too, but trying to avoid it if at all possible.....don't really have $$ for it. The vet would have to come over 20 miles to get here, then with his hand being even bigger than mine, he would have to do a C-section, plus antibiotics.....eeeeks. I'm hoping I can come up with something else or I'll have no choice but to call the vet.

Thank you for answering wren!!

You are welcome, I under stand about the $$$ issue.

Oh wow. I dont have livestock like goats so I am no help other than to say I hope for the best for you. I agree with Wren, it sounds like a vet is in order. Please let us know how she makes out.

Ohhh goodness!! I was just 'chatting' with my sister-in-law via IM and she happens to have an online friend who raises goats. She walked me through everything I should be feeling and what Black Beauty would be doing if she still had a kid in her. She said that if I couldn't feel anywhere to go 'in there', then her cervix has already closed up and she is done. For anyone else who ends up having this problem in the future, I will write what else she told me.

-a doe that still has a kid in her will go off feed
-will not let her kid nurse
-the doe would have been sick already
-she would have laid on the ground and been
trying to push without any results
-if she passed the placenta, she's probably done
-doe's can stand in the raised tail/downward tilted hips
position for up to a week or so after kidding
-they might have a hard belling for a week or so too

Well, that's what she said and I can't tell you what a relief it is!! Whew!!!

(now I feel just terrible about going 'in there' if she was done. Hope she
will forgive me! : )

Thanks sewincircle! Guess I was over reacting. I know cows really well, but I guess goats are different in a lot of ways. When my DH moved 350 miles away to take a job, I was worried about something like this and wanted to sell the goats, but 2 of them are my DS's and DD's so I couldn't. DH didn't want to get rid of them either. Anyway, I feel a little silly for being so worried for so long over what appears to be 'normal'. I just hope that if anyone else goes through this, they can find this link.

oh yeah.....I got pics of Black Beauty and her kid.....who is black as
night, so we named him Midnight. I will have to get them loaded and
post!

This is useful information for me to know for future - I'm glad you posted it. Still waiting for my Stuffin to kid. I think she's going to because her udder has gotten bigger in the past couple of weeks, but her sister's is still flat as a board, so I think she is actually pregnant. Now it's just a wait...

That is great news!!!!!!

Glad everything is well, Christy. They can be nerve wracking at times!!

We haven't dealt w/ an undelivered kid. Just ones that have had heads turned wrong or large heads that need help delivering. My brother had a ewe that started running a fever while in labor and both lambs were dead upon delivery. She needed help delivering. By the condition of the lambs, they must have died before she went into labor. We put her on a course of antibiotics and she was fine.

WOW! What a relief that is. I was worried for you. I just dont know anything about it.
I am so thankful that it came out with a good ending!!! :)
