I got some seeds of brug. sanguinea. I soaked them and stripped off the cork, as I read about, and now they're just sitting there. The embryo looks plump, but no rooting action. How long does it usually take? They're on a heat mat.
germinating brugmansia sanguinea
I planted some last month and it took 2-3 weeks. I also had mine on a heat mat but did not peel them. It was my first time germinating sang seeds and I have noticed they are much more vigorous than the several sets of brug seeds I planted at the same time. Being in Florida I'm hoping I can keep them going during our hot, muggy summers.
Good luck with your seeds!
Fred
Good luck, with y'll seeds.I heard they don't like the heat.I live in zone 8b and i can't grow them here.
hey, thanks. I just went downstairs and 2 of the little guys are putting out roots. I re-read the t and m seed start suggestions, and they, too, said keep it cooler, so I've taken those seeds that I can find and put them away from the heat mat.
Colchie, you are very welcome.I wish i could grow them here but we can't cause of the heat.
Keep us posted to see how they turn out.
Thanks,Cody

There are only a few places here in the US where B. sanguinea will grow well, bloom and stay healthy. These plants originated in elevations where the temperature is cool year round, but seldom freezes. It stops producing buds in temperatures above 72ºF. They fall prey to a virus in temperatures rising above 80ºF. I'm not sure whether the virus is dormant within the plant and switched on by high temperatures or whether high temperatures stress the plant enough that it falls prey to a virus. High temperatures can kill the plants in a very short time. I've had B. sanguinea plants, that looked very healthy and were growing actively, keel over dead within a day or two after daytime temperatures rose above 85ºF. I've killed enough of them that I've given up trying to grow them.
the place I saw them growing fantastic was in Victoria BC. Huge specimens! In the parks and at Butchard Gardens
