Most people immediately holler to let a professional do it, but I can't afford one. I know darn good and well there is a formula of common household products to clean an oil painting without damaging the paint.
We have a large 75-year-old portrait of a man who started a paper mill here. He was good to employees and he paid well to a society that mainly survived off subsistant farming. We did have a couple of tanning plants and the off-shoot of that, timbering. Well, the plant got torn down a couple of months ago and we were able to save many things, including the portrait.
Please help! Our museum is less than a year old and can't afford to run to professionals for every little item.
