ATOM vs. Pentium et al

I have a little ACER with an atom processor. It is so speedy it's nearly frightening LOL. Is this a processor which is going to "outdate" the older processors on our larger pc's? Is it even a compatible processor? What is and why the difference on between the ACER and my other machines? Just a curious non-techie asking . . .
