This little fellow tried to join the science fair through the cafeteria window on a very cold morning. S/he revived and after a short rest in a temporary box nest, and flew off.

I believe you are correct. This image from the link you provided is very close. http://www.theponderosalodge.com/images/Cedar_Waxwing.jpg We did not see the touch of red in the wings nor the tufted head, perhaps we found a young specimen.
We do have trees with berries in between the buildings. I'll alert the kids to be on the lookout for the famous berry passing activity.
Thanks for the quick response.
there are several warblers with black masks. Common Yellowthroat is another possibility. maybe it is that one. i didn't see the tufted head on yours either so i wasn't 100% positive.
Everything about it says cedar waxwing. It's certainly not any warbler.

Ditto to Cedar Waxwing, 100%.

good to know that my first instinct was correct! i doubt myself more, it seems, the older i get!
A flock of cedar waxwings just descended on my crabapple trees. This is definitely a cedar waxwing.
Thank you, everyone, for your help.
