strep seeds sowed Oct 4, 2008

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Here is an update on my little streps. They sure haven grown too much. I'm a little disapointed. I thought in three or four months, that maybe, I would see a flower on one of them. I guess I have to be a little more patient.
This is the container (cottage cheese) that they were sowed in. I didn't realize that the seeds were so small. I planted too many in one pot.

I transplanted a few of them into small solo cups. I'm hoping they will grow a little faster. These were Spinart x self seeds that were from Nancy (cedarnest).
Nancy hasn't been on line is such a long time. I hope she is doing OK.
Miss seeing her posts and pretty plants here.
Hurry back, Nancy!

I miss Nancy, too. Some of the strep leaves I got from her on the DG Marketplace in the fall have made nice babies.

Your seedlings are doing great, imadigger! They will start taking off. Thanks for sharing your photos of the progress. I hope you get something good....maybe a fantasy or two?

For anyone that hasn't seen Spin Art...

whenever you plant seed, you should always disturb the seedlings to encourage new growth, juust pick them up & putting them right back down does wonders.

They look great, Imadigger. I would have separated them a long time ago and put a dome on the newly planted babies. Fantastic job you have done and congratulations!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Gail, they are all under a dome. I was afraid they would dry up to quickly. I have them in a tray and sitting on a mat. I hope it works for them.

Interesting! I'd be glad if I could just get them to sprout after 3 failed attempts in the past year. :-(

Great article Goldleaf!

This is a tad off subject, but I had given up on these mid vein removed strep half leaves put down. I had burned them from the too strong light and fertilizer and was just heart sick about my labor of love. Look what I found this morning!! Only one leaf has babies but she really took off. I am hoping the other leaves follow suit quickly before the leaves die!!

The first two pictures I used a plastic shoebox and cut the mid vein out of the leaves........many of them...............in a very light mix...........

They are not going to die I hope. I have about 15 leaves done in the shoe box this way.......look at the top of the leaves where I burned them using regular strength fertilizer!! Very excited now.

For me personally, I am going to stick to just perlite and vermiculite when I take the mid vein out of a strep leaf from now on. These were planted at the same time I planted all those in the shoebox in a very light mix.

Happy,happy!
It looks like your second mixture worked a lot better.I hope your leaves don't die,but sometimes on a plant like a Rex Begonia babies can still come up even when the mama leaf dies.
Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is why I wouldn't give up on these leaves as horrible as they look..........sometimes a regular strep leaf can be put down.......I think it is gone and up pops a baby long after the mother leaf has passed away (LOL)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Last night I found a couple of violets that did just that! The mama leaves had withered and browned, but there were tiny babies growing! I didn't know that could happen. I'm watching to see if they are strong enough to grow into healthy plants.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

It shoudn't hurt them at all.
Lynn
