Fish Rescue

Who'd have thought...

So I walked into my bedroom, where my goldfish tank is, and one was doing a nose dive in the gravel. I poked at my fish and he swam around. It was then that I saw he had something lodged in his mouth.

I didn't know what else to do, so I pulled him out. He had a piece of gravel that was stuck in his mouth.

I tried to get it out with my pinky nail, but it didn't budge. I got some tweezers and was finally able to remove it.

He is swimming around happily today. I can't believe I had to pull something out of my fish's mouth.

Anyone else have a similar situation???

I had a very large goldfish in a 55 gallon tank that would do that to smaller tankmates. He would try to eat the cory catfish when they were small. The first time it happened I heard a lot of noise at the tank and saw Big Ben the goldfish swimming rapidly around in the tank with half of a cory sticking out of his mouth. Caught him and tried to pull the fish out with no luck. I too had resort to the tweezers. Thought for sure one or both of them would die. But Big Ben went on his merry way without a thought and the little cory looked like it was a bit bruised but survived as well. Big Ben did that a couple more times which required the use of tweezers until the corys got too big for him to get their heads in his mouth. Big Ben lived for quite a long time after that but did die of unknown causes about six months ago.

Thanks for sharing tetleytuna! That is a hilarious that he kept "eating" the other fish!

Piggy fish! Tet-don't you feed your poor wittle goldie . . .? LOL!

Yes he was quite the pig. That thing would eat anything whether it would fit in his mouth or not. Before I go to work it is take the dogs out, feed the fish, feed the outside feral cats, med the dogs and then IF I have time grab something on the way out the door. Upon getting home it is take the dogs out, feed the fish, med the dogs check the feral cats food bowl and THEN feed me. I tell ya the little brats are spoiled rotten. LOL

My large ranchu, Igor, got gravel stuck in his mouth. He isn't very smart and kept trying to eat while it was lodged in there. I first flipped him upside out and pressed him gently against the glass. This must of done it because the by the time I got the tweezers out the gravel was out.

Glad to hear others have aquariums too. I started with my pond last summer and my fish obsession grew into two aquariums and a betta bowl:) They really help during the winter!

Tetley, I have a similar routine. Get up, let the dogs out, feed Poppy the koi, turn on PTK's full spectrum light, test ammonia level in PTK's pond (thank God the biofiltration finally started working), check the cats automatic feeder to make sure it has food in it, change the dog water, let the dogs in, feed the dogs, medicate one of them (she gets 2 meds, one is twice a day), wake the parrots up, turn on the parrots' radio, change the parrots' papers, feed the parrots, take a shower, get dressed, drop hubby off at work and drive myself to work. Even get home, let the dogs out, change the dogs water bowl, make sure parrots still have pellets in their bowls, clean the cats litter box, let the dogs in the house, feed the dogs, medication to two of the dogs (oh yeah, and all three dogs get salmon oil twice a day), partial water change for PTK if needed, parrots to bed at 7:45 p.m. (cover cages, turn off radio & light, clean water bottles and fresh water, plus sing a song), dogs go out at least two more times...oh yeah and somewhere in there is dinner for myself & hubby. No wonder we eat so much fast food!

In fair weather I also like to walk the collie and tinker in the yard.

Ah... the morning routine of animal lovers:) I have three dogs, two cats, two aquariums on different levels of the house and a betta in a large bowl. In the summer I add feeding the pond fish. Add a three year old boy to the mix and it is amazing I ever get out the door! LOL Hmmm...maybe I need a parrot!

Or three! (Almost four today...I don't like chain pet stores but the place I went to buy Amquel Plus today had an adorable conure that insisted in making goo-goo eyes at me.)

I love conures! If I could have a bird, that would be what I would get. Unfortunately my big cat Gonzo is a bird killer. I'm not sure how she does it but she is always dragging dead birds of all kinds into the garage. She does keep the pond free of grackles though. I dare a heron to try and touch my pond! LOL The vet thinks she is part bengal and she sure acts like a wild cat.

Gorgeous cat!

Great routines! I'm glad that some of the pet owning responsibility is starting to be shared by the kiddos!
