A fine day in southeast Texas for birding.....

Sugar Land, TX

I packed up my D90 and the big 500mm Nikon f/4 P lens and went to Brazos Bend State Park, southeast of Houston. The sun was out and it warmed up enough that I was in short sleeves. I took over 450 photos and got a few good ones. The special treat was the Vermillion Flycatcher that was posing for me. I will post some of the photos.

These crows were harassing the White Ibis that were catching crawfish. Every time they got one the crows would start attacking them, I suppose trying to make it drop the crawfish. The crows did not get any that I saw.

These guys were out too! I was really hoping to see some gators and got my wish. This is the biggest one of the four that I saw.

Great pics Chris; I love the Vermillion Flycatcher.

I believe the hawk may be a Red-shouldered Hawk.

Love the seen with the Crows and Ibis.

Thanks for posting these!

Oooooh I am so going to Brazos bend this weekend!! I can't believe you saw a flycatcher - awesome!!

I think you are right about the cormorant - the neotropic have a little white line that makes a V shape around the orange part on their faces

LOL Juney

Chris I went to Brazos Bend today! No flycatcher for me but still a great day. Passed a few birding groups, they said I was right in the area where it has been spotted every year, but no one had seen it yet today. Oh well! I'll just have to go back. What a beautiful place. I took over 600 photos. Yikes! Not as good as yours since I only have an 18-200 mm lens. That's ok though, I saw plenty through the binoculars. Thanks for the idea to go out there! I will go through all my pics and should have them posted by tomorrow.

Heidi,
So sorry the Vermillian was not out posing for you. Maybe he will be out next time. I am supposed to go to some new areas this week but plan to go back to Brazos Bend next week and hike to the back lakes. I will post some photos after I go. I have an older Nikon 400mm f/5.6 ED MF lens coming and I am anxious to try it out.

Did you see any gators???

Later,
Chris

Oh yes at least 6! Not until later in the day though. Guess they hide until the sun comes up.
