Coir?

Ok, has anyone ever used Coir instead of Peat for there soiless mixes?

I haven't on gessies. It holds water very well but at the same time drains very well. I have used it in outdoor planters (mixed in with regular planting mix) on those I wanted to retain water longer and not dry out as fast. As always with coir, one needs to rinse it thoroughly under running water to remove any salt residue that may be present.

AH ha! I didn't know that. I have just noticed that you see it more and more. I wasn't sure how different it really was than peat. Just curious what anyone knew about it. Thanks for info.

I know, you do see discussion about it...pros and cons. Some promote the use of it because it is easly renewable unlike peat bogs. I have a couple coir bricks downstairs but hestitate to try it on gessies because I am happy with what I normally do using sphagnum peat. It could be an interesting experiment to see how the coir does and I would think lots of additional perlite would be needed as coir retains water so well. Might be worth a try on something that didn't matter too much.

It seems to be used a lot in hydroponics, and it was in an amaryllis kit I purchased late last year.

Yes, I can see that application. I wish I was more help on it's use for gessies but I have no experience with it. If you ever try it, let us know what you think.
