I want to order a bunch of seeds and am not sure if there are any companies who have a great variety? Thanks
M
Any companies that specialize in seeds for butterfly?
Hello Maureen :)
Well, your question is so general...there are plant seeds for host plants and nectar plants...
Are you looking for specific butterflies to come?
If you're just looking for an easy way to attract some butterflies...
There are general seed mixes for butterfly flowers that you can just scatter in your garden that you can just pick up at your local nursery...or even a grocery store sells seeds now.
hi, just wondering. I had a list of about 20 plants and was hoping to get most if not all from one seed company to save on shipping.
Turns out i did a bunch of trading and got like 15 different varieties for the butterflys (in general, no specific - although i am partial to my monarchs:-)
thanks SusanLouise.
I know what you mean Maureen, I've been looking at all the catalogs and can never find everything I want at one place!
But you can try Wildflower Farm. http://www.wildflowerfarm.com/index.php?p=catalog&parent=38&pg=1
And also, from the Monarch Waystation Program, you can get a selection of seeds for $16

Prairie Moon is fairly good on milkweeds. I know what you mean. I ended up getting seeds from different sources and couldn't get everything I wanted. Even got some seeds from an eBay source.
Mrs Ed, what a great website that monarchwatch.org is. I loved the waystation program. May have to do that, but not this year, maybe next. I've got so much to do in the yard this year and if i'm going to be a "certified" waystation i need to make sure i can commit to do it 100% right. I'll check out wildflowerfarm too. thank you!
You can search the Watchdog for specific types of plants and seeds. We've got 133 companies that say that they have plants attractive to bees, birds and butterflies

There are 143 companies that say they have seeds

I'm sure that there is some overlap, but there ought to be some unknown jewels in this group if you want to sift through them.
Maureen,
I may have the opportunity in 2011 to put in a Monarch Waystation on city property. I'm really excited about it.
Wow, that's really cool. Good luck with it Mrs. Ed:-)
oh, garden watchdog reminds me that while searching for some seeds for my own butterfly garden, I've seen that many items are available at Diana's Seeds.
Mrs_Ed,
I ordered from Diane's Flower Seeds and Johnny's Seeds this year.
I got Scarlett Runner Bean seeds from both...one had the red, one the pink...
Also got a wide variety of Zinnias...'Red Spider' from Diane's...'Zowie Yellow Flame', 'Profusion Cherry' and 'Queen Red Lime' from Johnny's Seeds...
I also got some tall Coreopsis from Diane's too. She has a great selection!
And I got a few more varieties of Sunflowers from Johnny's...love their varieties...a brand new 'Buttercream' is beautiful!!! I'll be growing that with 'Moulin Rouge' and the 'Lyng's California Greystripe' for the birds :)

coolio! Yah, I like her selection.
I got some milkweed seeds from Georgia vines this winter, don't know germination rate on them yet so can't comment. She had some good varieties.
Mrs_Ed, what kinds of milkweed did you order? I just got some milkweed seeds from her also. I'm doing cold stratification on them for a month before before trying to germinate them, so I've got them in a bit of moist sand in a baggie in the fridge. But that depends on the species, I guess.
Let's see, from her I got:
Asclepias hallii
Asclepias hirtella
Asclepias purpurascens
Asclepias verticillata
Asclepias virdiflora
Plus I have three other types. A. tuberosa, A. incarnata 'Ice Ballet', and A. incarnata.
THey've been chilling and I'm going to winter sow them tomorrow.
Oh, plus I got some from a trade.
BTW, on the milkweed packets I have from her, it says something about planting them 1/2 inch deep, but other sources on germinating milkweed seed say 1/4 inch deep.
I forgot about this place too. I get the catalog and it looks promising. They have an on-site butterfly garden, so I'm sure they might have everything you're looking for.

I have a better one for you, Mrs_Ed. Although that company you mentioned has been in Texas for many years and carries some lovely Texas natives, they seem to prefer more species from far away...California, other far away parts of the U.S., Africa, Europe, etc. They are located in an area where they are surrounded by many great Texas natives that grow wild....which they don't seem interested in, except for the few more commonly available Texas natives that they have sold for years. I just like this one better, which is entirely native species.

Wow linda. That's just odd.
Well, I just happened to get both of those catalogs recently, Seed source and Wildseed Farms.
plus a "few" others. ;)
