These seedlings are from Dutchlady and they are looking pretty good. I read most of the stuff in the sticky, but didn't get an answer to this specific question. It's possible I missed it though.
Anyway, my seedlings are growing in a 1:1 mix of potting soil and perlite and are about 3" tall. I started them last August I think. How do I go from this 1:1 mix to the next size pot. BTW they are in 16 oz plastic cups. When I take them out of these pots I'm guessing the planting mix will all fall off because it's so loose. Or do I need to try to keep the mix around the roots?
Thanks for your answers.
How to repot seedlings
I'll be interested in the response's as well I have 4 seedlings and they are also in plastic cups.
In my opinion you need to keep as much of the original root ball as possible, if some falls off it is not that big of a deal, just try not to rip or tear the roots. This could lead to more problems with infections and rot, not to mention set the plants back slightly. You can help to keep the soil on the plants by keeping it moist, not wet, when transplanting them. I usually go from small cups to one to three gallon pots depending on the hieght of the seedling and root mass. I would recommend a 3:1 or 2:1 potting soil to perlite mixture, depending on how well your potting soil drains.

keeping in line with what dave said, i'd cut the bottom out of the plastic cup. then set i in the new container that should have a whole dug out for the cup. cut down the side of the cup. then, slide it away and fill in the gap with the new soil.
Ya what Dete said...that's a much better method.
Sounds like very good advice. Thanks very much. Especially the part about cutting the cup away. I am guessing I should wait til the weather warms up quite a bit to do this. Like maybe March?
I would wait until the night time temps are above 50.
