Hi to all the large breed lovers, I've just been through hell and back, so I thought I'd share with you the experience....
As you know, my beloved Newman, a 4yr old blue merle, is the love of our lives! Last week, while I was working out in the garden, Newman was next to me, as usual, basking in the sun. I would snack on an occasional strawberry, and he seemed interested, so I gave him a taste, he liked it, so he ended up eating about 4.
Later that afternoon, I noticed large pea size bumps appearing on his nose. I have seen it only once before, years ago, with my other Dane, Ralph, and the vets had no clue what it was. They start out as bumps under the skin, then grow larger, and they burst with blood and puss.....Ralph was scared for life...so I rushed Newman to the vet (same one) and she was dumbfounded! She remembered, and wasted no time, he was put on antibiotics and steroids, 12 pills a day. He started showing improvement right away.
I also had noticed that Newman had these bumps in his armpits, which starting me thinking that he was having an allergic reaction to something. And the strawberries were the only thing he had out of the norm. So we googled it...and sure enough....that's what it is.
Please beware....they may not show signs the first time, it builds up, and then they have the outbreak.
We also discovered that grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs as well!
Hope to save someone else from making this terrible mistake. I feel just awful.
Please keep Newman in your prayers, he's doin better, but he's really drugged up!
