I am doing the ROOOO dance

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

As many of you know, I lost all my chickens and roo's a few months ago. I had not finished the new coop so have not gotten any more.
Yesterday Billy and I were coming back from feeding the horses, and MR C (Who own's the ranch) came walking up the driveway carrying a small cage. He told me what was inside belonged to me. I looked for my small dog Tiny, thinking she got out and went down the road for a visit, but no she was in the front yard. Billy and I walked closer and he handed me the cage. In there was a CHICKEN.... Not like my Rocks I use to have, actually I dont know what kind it is, but will take some pictures this weekend and post them. ANYHOO me and billy were doing the Chicken dance... SO I put it in a old rabbit hutch so it would be safe until this weekend when we can finish the coop.
OK so not really knowing what kind or what sex as it looked like a young bird, we were really happy we have a chicken.....
Then this am at 5:30 I am out feeding the horses, and what do I hear???? Good Morning in ROO LANGUAGE... What I had hoped was a hen, turned out to be a Rooster.. LOLOLOL... It did not matter, that was music to my ears...
So as I am getting Billy ready for school, I tell him the chicken was singing for me this morning and I repeated what I had heard... He looked at me and said.(AND I QUOTE HERE) Nanny, thats not a chicken, thats a Rooster..... Smart Fella he is.
So this wekend, we will break down and get the rooster some Friends... Its a small rooster, white in color with Black wings and I am thinking Black tail feathers, but I am wondering if he has lost them and that is why I could not tell what he was???
It dont really matter what he is, we have welcomed him to our home and I am so happy to hear him sing in the am...

I had to share with you all....

Hah!! Raising him up right, Ms J!! More power (and birds) to you!!!

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Finally got new pictures of him, would you know it, the day I moved him into his new space. He had been staying in a rabbit hutch, needed to rework the last old chicken coop that I knew the varmets could not break into.

MsJ -he looks like he could possibly be EE. Those pouffy cheek feathers? If you and Billy hatched him some Ameraucanas.....oooohhh....lol.

That is what I am hoping for, I have questions about that but I figure if he is a EE and my girls are EE's then we for sure will try and have some EE babies... OHHH OHH OHHH

Clarkson, KY

The unsuccessful Ameraucanas are EEs from what I gather so you may be able to get some pretty blue eggs....pretty, pretty blue eggs...

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I dont know much about letting the hens lay eggs and hatch them, I have a bunch of questions...
What age do they start sitting on the eggs?
Does the chicken fairy and mother nature tell them what to do so I dont have to intervien?

Clarkson, KY

Varies breed to breed, and if CF tells 'em sometimes they listen. Generally I think 6 mos is a safe bet. None of mine went broody last year so it was me and the 'bator. Mother nature did NOT design be as a chicken Momma so....steep learning curve....

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

How do you know if they are broody or not?

Clarkson, KY

They won't leave the nest they've made and burble and threaten if you get near to check for eggs....

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Oh I see then. None of my other girls ever did that. But they had just started laying when they were sent to the coop in the sky

Looking out the coop. It might not be much, but it is safe and has a big yard for him and the girls

Nice setup. Homey I call it!

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Cost me all of 3 dollars for nails. The entire pen is enclosed with wire and (Dont Laugh here) Old Wire Bed springs... LOL I just worked with what I had. I re did the bottom floor, cleaned it out and put new wood in. The back of the coop was gone, so I found a peice of tin for that and the sides. Now it is enclosed. It has a window and a door and the door has a hole in it. Not bad for someone that is not a carpenter... It will do...

Clarkson, KY

My kinna place! You go, girl! And Billy'll learn some vital lessons from seeing that setup!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

He's a handsome fellow.
They are going to love the ladder! Who said having animals cost a fortune-just look around and let your imagination go. I love the way you used the bedspring.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I just love this place, and with some sprucing up it will be pretty again.. My budget does not allow me to use new items, so I get creative and find things I can reuse. I do dream sometimes of one of them fancy new chicken tractors, but I really think it would be out of place here...

I think Roo is an wonderful chicken, he got loose when I was moving him, landed on a fence and let me come and pick him up... He does not seemed bothered by me in the least. Cant wait to introduce the girls to him... got to wait a few months for that.

Clarkson, KY

It's beautiful MsJ!! I can see the creativity and the age of the stuff an, an, and it really is pretty!! I'd never leave!!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Gotta love that personality. He must have been handled quite abit.
