Interest for Rose/Heather Orders - Calgary

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I am looking to see if anyone in Calgary is interested in roses (including micro-minis!) or heather for the spring from The Heather Farm. I was planning to put in the order so it arrives early May and have a get-together at my house at a time convenient for as many people as possible to pick up orders (I am confined to transit myself). Let me know if you are interested. Right now I am just getting interest. Here is the website and information I received via email from them:

The Heather Farm and Classic Miniature Roses: www.theheatherfarm.com
Email correspondence:

"Our 10 % discount will apply to any combination of 10 or more plants ( roses and/or heather). That is our only discount. Our collections do provide a lower price per plant."

This is the first time I have done this, so let me know if you have ideas on how to make this better/run smoothly. Thanks!

I'm in for mini-roses. We had a discussion on the Calgary Horticultural Forum about heather and it's not hardy here. I think someone even emailed the Heather Farm? Jo N & S, Carol? Do you recall this?

I'm in for the mini roses. The Heather Farm is the retail side for the "direct from the grower" order that The Calgary Rose Society orders from for their Huge Mother's Day Sale of miniatures. The Rose Society highly recommends the Heather Farm for miniature roses. I have a wish list started for an order to the Heather Farm.
I don't think heather would survive our whacky winters.

I'm glad they are a good supplier :) They are the only people who sell micro-minis in Canada that I have found (haven't done a ton of looking around though).

Thanks for the link to The Heather Farm, redheadedwonder11. I am going to put an order in for a Heather collection. Wonder if I should wait until I get home to BC in March, or order now. Hmmmmmm

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Why don't you order now and request shipping after you return date DonM47?

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Tha'ts what I have decided to do, Dahlianut. I can't believe you guys in zone 3 can't order Heather too. Some are listed as Zone 4 (Zone 3 with protection).

I ordered four Erica Tetalix.

Daphne Underwood
Pink Glow
Pink Star
Rosea

Woo Hoo, some thing else to look forward to this Spring. ^_^

If I recall the information we got from the heather farm it's too dry and won't do our radical freeze/thaw Chinook thing. Looking forward to pics DonM47.

Dahlianut is partially right - not enough moisture or humidity here, but equally importantly, heaths and heathers are some of the few genera that actually need acid soil, while we have strongly alkaline soil.

Glad the link was useful DonM47 :D

I emailed the Heather Farm for recommendation of their top 12 most fragrant continuous bloomers. here's what they came back with:

thanks for the request and sorry for the delay. These are all very good roses with good fragrance, health and vigor. Sun Sprinkles, Hot Tamale, Lavender Crystal, Raspberry Punch, Centerpiece, Loving Touch, Peaches & Cream, Heartbreaker, Carrot Top, Sweet Marie, Starina, Dorola. Bye for now.

I find that since our climate is so dry in Calgary, most fragrant roses are only noticeable right up & close. If you bring some indoors, it will perfume an entire room though. Early morning & evening is the best for a garden stroll to smell the roses. They are hardly noticeable in the afternoon, unless you have your nose in the flower

Good to know. My mother hasn't grown roses in YEARS and I don't know a thing about them. Thanks joanna :)

RedHead,
I have volunteered to work on a mini-rose committee with the Calgary Rose Society, so I will be getting some miniatures thru their special order. Thanks for the invite to join your order though.

Jo South with is the CRS placing that order? I lost the email. Thanks.

Dnut,

They have the Mother's Day Mini Rose Sale. You buy them on the spot at the sale. I think it is held at the Lynwood Community Centre, but should check to make sure

O I thought they had a thing for members where you could pre-order.
