Need care instructions for clearance bulbs from Walmart

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I bought 2 bags of 12 tulip bulbs each (in good condition), and several bags of 2 Iris rhizomes each from Walmart today & all were on clearance: $ 1.00 each bag. The tulip bulbs are plump & trying to start. I think I can just put them in an onion bag & put in the refrig but what about the iris rhizomes. They are dry but still have green leaves. Can I just soak them in water for an hour or so, dry them off and put in onion bags in the refrig? Any help you can give would be appreciated. I live in z6 so I won't be planting them outdoors until April or May. Thanks in advance for the help.

If your ground isn't frozen, you can plant them now. They need a cold spell to bloom correctly.

We are in Pennsylvania. I would need a jackhammer to be able to plant them. (LOL) What if I put them in Moist sawdust and put them outside?

I think I'd just stick them in deep flower pots and put them in a protected area outside.

Me, too. The DH told me the ground is frozen a foot down. Even the tulips?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Yes, they all need a chill period. Maybe set them up against the house.

Ok, I can do that. Thanks so much for the information.

Good luck! Remember, when the bulbs begin to emerge, get them into the bright light!!! If you don't, they will be spindly and fall over. Get them into the ground as soon as it's workable.

I vote fridge for the tulips. Pot them up and put them outside in a sunny spot a month before the ones you have or in your neighbourhood usually break ground. Let them bloom in the pots and then put them in the ground as soon as they finish flowering leaving all the foliage on to die back naturally.

Sounds good dahlianut. Do you think I ought to do the same for the Iris or follow Kay's instructions?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My iris I've got as divisions when they could go directly into the ground. I would go with Kay's advice for the iris.

best thing if you want them to bloom inside plant them and enjoy if you want them outside just plant them in a pot with normal soil and put them outside north side of the house so they will be cold and stay dormant at the point they are now they as soon as soil is not frozen plant in sunny location and enjoy

Well, I kinda took everything into consideration & filled a pot with moist sawdust & put them on the floor beside the door to the greenhouse. They will keep cool down there. The tulips are still in the fridge. Thanks for all the advice *& help.
