I moved a year ago and brought some plants with me, but at this time all I have is one scrawny cutting that doesn't look like it is going to root! This plant doesn't make seeds- does anyone have plants to sell or trade? I desperately want some for this summer's garden.
Wanted-Greek Columnar Basil
If you can hold off a month or so, there is a nursery about 30 miles north of me that I like to go to in the spring time, and they sell quite a few diff basil plants in the spring, It's one of the reasons I like to go there. I can pick you up one and you can just pay for it, will be a nice sized plant. Nothing tiny I promise, I'm always impressed with their plants.
Last year I picked up Pepper basil also which is hard to find, I also picked up variegated african blue basil and regular african blue basil. Greek column, and variegated pepetual, (spelling) They also had a lemon basil and regular basil. and Some purple basil too, but can't remember the name of it.
Thanks, KathyAnn- I would definitely be interested. I am keeping one puny plant alive, but don't hold much hope for it! When the time comes, let me know if they ship, or whether you would be interested in sending me a plant.
They don't ship, I know, but I can get them and ship them to you. I'll try my best to remember , I'll be calling them in feb sometime to see when they are going to start putting out their plants. Their a little colder than I am, and probably won't start putting them out till the end of march. But i'll find out for sure.
I forgot to mention ithink the pots their in are the 5 or 6 inch square pots, and last year < maybe they were 3.00 each, I can't remember for sure. Or if they'll be higher. But they are the nicest plants I've ever seen for the price I paid.
Which ones are you interested in? Any others besides the greek column? so I'll make a note of it .
Nope- the only one I want is Greek Columnar- and not even the veriegated one of it- I have never had a Basil that is so intensely flaovred or aromatic, and I love the growth habit- We get strong winds here, and it is so sturdy it doesn't need staking up. It gets about 3' tall and very compact in width. I just love it! I will pay whatever shipping is plus your trouble-
No trouble at all. I'll be sure to let you know when I go up there to look around
Hello,
Off the record, of course, given that...I think she only does business with wholesalers, but I'm not 100% certain, perhaps she would be willing to ship you a few plants. Here is the Email address: http://www.jgilsongreenhouses.com and she does carry--as you can see from her complete herb list--about 10-15 types of basil, including the W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L Green Columnar Basil cultivar named "Lesbos" which is, I guess, where they originate from. I'm going to find out how she propogates them, but I did discover that by layering them and putting a U or fencing nail over the stem of the part that is under the loam, that it WILL root there! I bet therein lies the secret! I hope this helps...but, if she doesn't do wholesale for retail, I apologize. Jodie is very approachable and her website even includes her Email and Telephone Number. Hope this may help! Personally, I really enjoyed the "Piston" basi and the Cinnamon Basil and the Napoletano Basil, each of which she also grows, and, in fact; she has the most complete list of basil that I think you will locate anywhere, though maybe I'm simply partial. LOL Oh, the Piston basil is awesome for container gardening with other herbs. Have you tried Lime Basil, as it is wonderful in Fruit Salads and other dishes where you want a distinctly herbal lime flavor with an infusion of basil as well? (I did collect SOME seeds for the latter and may be persuaded [trade...] for some other interesting plant, seeds or something(s) similar. I like to laugh about my seed collection as the Old Lady in the Shoe Collection as you'd think I were a floral provisioner I have some many types of flower seeds and herb seeds and tomato seeds, including a genetic cross by the University of Oregon between the Blueberry and Cherry Tomato, resulting in a SUPER-HIGH anti-oxidant laden blue tomato.
Feel free to either D-Mail me or Email me at gardenerthor@comcast.com. Ciao for now!
Thor :-)
I went by that nursery yesterday, still a littl early for them. Had to go near there for another reason, thought i'd stop and see if they had anything out yet. Probably another 3 to 4 weeks yet before they put out the stuff that doesn't get frost bite.
Just wanted to check in with you
