Seeding Rosemary

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Any tips? Thought I would start some seeds under lights & move to the greenhouse in March. Do I need bottom heat for germination? Thanks

Rosemary is difficult to germinate. Email Richter Herbs in Canada--they are good about answering questions

I grew some from seed last year.I had always heard it was difficult.I sowed under lights with no bottom heat.My results were fine.My conclusion is,its no harder than anything else. The yields are small.Only about 20% of the seed germinated. But the ones that did,did very well.It is is easier to take cuttings once you have estalished plants.

I seeded the rosemary on Jan 24th. This morning the 1st seedling emerged this morning...yeah

Got 5 more up today. It's weird how much a little seed will change over night. All of a sudden a little sprout with a couple of leaves appear.

Joannabanana,it is the miracle of birth.People who do not grow from seed are missing alot.It makes you a better gardener.Like the acorn that grows into the mighty oak.

Update on the Rosemary. Got 19 little seedlings so far & they seem to be still popping up. The package was open and from 2006/7. I think most germinated. Temps btwn 60ºF & 70ºF. Under lights. Kept on the dry side. 1/2 starter mix & 1/2 cactus mix
