I was wondering if anyone has the yellow flowered Strep. ALISSA,yet?I saw a photo of it at Dibley's and it was to die for.
Lynn
Strep. Alissa
I just had to go look it up ... really pretty pale yellow blooms: http://gouk.about.com/od/ukgardensandgardening/ig/New-Plants-at-RHS-Chelsea/Dibleys-Streptocarpus--Alissa-.htm
I have it and it is in bloom, let me go take a picture for you and come back..
Sue
Susan,it's lovely. Is it a large grower? I love Streps.,but some are so large.
Lynn
Mine is a big grower but I find allot of mine are large growers.... Gail, if I had to get rid of every strep except one, I would keep Silvia as she was one of my first streps....
Ibrabec, I hope I got that right...LOL If you remind me in the spring I could send you a leaf or I could try to root you one but sometimes I don't always root to well. BUT I could try... Just let me know....
Hugs,
Susan
Gail or Anybody for that matter... Do any of you have B. Pajama Party? If you do could one of you put a leaf down for me please? I love that one....
Sue
I just got a goose egg before winter came.... I hate winter as we can't ship... OK so maybe we can but I don't like my plants to get to a person dead.... Thanks Gail..... Lilriver has one on ebay so I may wind up bidding on it... I hate paying shipping on one plant...
Sue
lilriver has great plants but I am too tight to spend shipping for one plant........
I hate that I can't get rid of a lot of streps right now because I don't want to ship dead plants, either............it isn't cold here but it is everywhere else.
I hate paying for one plant also is why more then likely I will wait.... Oh Jim, do you have a leaf of this one??? HINT???
Sue
I have so many babies right now I don't know what I even have, Susan! (if they are not blooming)
Sue,
I will remind you.Hopefully,I can still root leaves. It shouldn't be much harder than a Rex Begonia leaf, right?
As some of you know,I gave up Gessies years ago,due to many causes, but you'all are seducing me with these beautiful pictures.^_^.(I think you are getting to Lin,too).LOL
Due to health issues,I need to try and control myself and decide I don't need EVERY plant I love.My other problem is I have such a hard time throwing away any extra plants or leaves.
Several of you have generously offered me starts or leaves, when it warms up,but since I have nothing to give in return right now,I will certainly be glad to purchase them.I will be checking the Marketplace, too.
A question for those of you that grow a lot of Streps? I have noticed some of you cut the leaves back about halfway,Gail for instance, in many photos. That would be great for me with my limited space. Can you cut back nearly all of the leaves without harming the plant? One more question and then I will shut up LOL.I always made my own soil mixes with added perlite, vermiculite, peat moss and charcoal, but I never wicked my plants. It totally wore me out watering and grooming hundreds of plants. When I start again,I really need good advice about proper mixes for wicking.
Thanks to all,
Lynn.
I don't wick my streps......I use half Canadian Peat moss and half giant #3 perlite for streps which have a string but I water individually. I use vermiculite and a lot of perlite with a soil less mix for starting strep leaves. Hang on.......it is just too cold to be shipping leaves now. Many of us plan on putting both leaves and plants of all gessies on the marketplace when it warms up some.
There are several reasons why I cut back the leaves on my streps:
1.space
2. start new leaves with a wedge
3. trade leaves so I need to cut leaves
I know it is fun to let some of them get real big but I just don't have the space and love propagating more than anything. It doesn't seem to hurt the plants or the blooms. I use an old big pair of pinking shears to cut the leaves with some shape.
Goldleaf is the one (Susan, too) who can allow one knockout strep to get so large with magnificent foliage that she can only put two streps to a shelf........
Thanks,Gail. Is it okay to cut nearly every leaf back on a Strep. to save space?
Lynn
It is okay to cut them in half or trim them back pretty hard on each leaf. (remember the plant will keep producing small leaves and they will get big also)
Here are a couple of streps I haven't cut back in a while because Poochie (the orange) is one of my favorites and I haven't had time to start a new tray of leaves............but when I do trade and start new leaves I will cut a little more than half of the leaf off.......then do the final trimming with the pinking shears.
sorry about the day bed and clothes on it!
I have to cut all my streps or there is not enough room... I have 3 big stands and one little one and I am not getting anymore... This is it for me... I have no problems giving away plants as for me that is part of the fun... I don't need something in return from you for a leaf or a baby... Not my way at all... You can ask most here that is how I am... I will put a leaf down for you to see if I can get the strep to root.... Ok boss just called no work I am going back to bed...
Hugs,
Sue
Thank you so much, all of you, both for your instructions and your generous spirits. When I get started back up,giving people starts and leaves is part of my fun, too.I can't bear to throw extras away...LOL.
I am pretty experienced with AVS,Episcia,Sinningias and a few others, but the only Streps. I ever grew came from mixed seed from the Gesneriad Society. This will be a new learning experience.
Hugs,Lynn
no more new streps turtle?
we will see hehehehe
JIM
Not yet Jim, I do have a few coming.. Do you have a magic ball??? LOLOL I was going to take pictures today but got to carried away with trimming and tending them... So no pictures today....LOL Jim I have your name on yours...LOL
Susan
cool bean, talk to you soon.hope you feel better soon
JIM
Ok Jim you broke my arm I just took pictures of my Sinns in bloom and one Kohleria... So here goes. Oh this is not the blooming forum so I will post there...
Sue
Another super nice photo, M3! If you don't mind my asking, what kind of a camera do you use?
Canon s5 IS
But sometimes I also use my Canon s3 IS or even the s2 IS...
I wanna Nikon one day *siiiiiiiiiigh*
It takes great pictures. I think Gail has a Nikon. I have a Kodak camera DX6490 (it's kinda big and heavy) and use the Easy Share system with the dock for the camera.

I dropped my Nikon 40 (the computer tech said there was no reason to buy the 60 or the 80 when I was just taking macro pictures of flowers).............I haven't had it fixed yet. But..............when Circuit City was going out of business my friend in Houston ran to get her a Nikon 40 which she bought. I asked her to go get me another one real fast while they were on sale.........when she got there mine was 50.00 less than she had paid.
Susan I have Pajama Party!!! And I will get a leaf down for you! I am one of the people you have been so very generous with and I'll be very happy to get you a leaf started of this one!!
The one I'd like to find is Bristol's Party Animal as I have loved all the fantasies by Bristol and I find they bloom true from leaf WAY more often than any other fantasies.
Lynn your right, Alissa is to die for, I croaked the one leaf of it I was fortunate enough to get my hands on though! LOL Beautiful close up of it MM
