A couple of weeks ago my neighbor (2 miles away) called to say that they had MY pheasant. I said that was funny because I didn't have a pheasant. Anyway their dog was trying to kill it so they wanted to know if I would take it. The next morning I went down to their place, stuck it in a box and brought it home. He has been here ever since along with my dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, cow, chickens, guineas, and peacock. He really is pretty, of course he never left, I can't get anything to.
Phil the pheasant
Ha! Love it. Been trying to get pics of my herd. All this cold weather has everyone hanging out together: horse cow goats chickens. cats and dogs inside thanks to my too soft DH...
I'm trying to post a picture but it won't let me.
??? that happened to me once. But I re-loaded and had no problems...Dial-up? Busy time of night?
Not dial-up but ever so often I have this problem on this site. The picture was kind of the whole point.
OH! That is a Nice Pheasant "Pretty"
Phabulous Phillip Pheasant!! Lovely Phellow!!
Does anybody know any thing about pheasants? He is really tame and in love with the kid's red go cart. He comes right up to me.
Pheasants from what i've heard are like chickens as far as personality and their up keep. I did hear tho they peck eachother alot when their young and the males can be violent when mateing.
Thats just what i've heard don't personally know.
I had a red golden pheasant about eight years ago. He was gorgeous, but very aggressive with my chickens. He would stalk right up to a chicken and rip their feathers out, lol. They eat gamebird crumbles and will fly away if not kept in an enclosure (although you may have an unusually tame one who prefers to stick around), however most are flighty. He's a healthy looking fellow. Congrats.
Don't know anything about pheasants, except that is one beautiful bird. Is this your home where all of these animals are or is it a Zoo? No wonder you neighbor is two miles away, it takes that much property to house all those friends. LOL.
WOW, that is one beautiful boy! The colors are wonderful.
I know nothing about them either. I just like to look. 0_0
Hatstack Remember "Claire" is the one building a Zoo LOL
Is he a ring neck pheasant? He acts like he doesn't really know what to do around the other birds, I get the feeling he has been hand raised in a cage. He just seems kind of lost but he likes me. I'll keep in mind that they can be aggressive, he is kind of the odd man out so maybe that will help. I have heard they can be flighty , I had Petey the peacock show up in June and I'm still waiting for him to leave. Petey is the king of the guinea birds. NO, I don't live at a zoo but I do have 26 acres.
He does look like a ringneck from the photo. There are many beautiful breeds of pheasant. It took me a bit to decide on the breed I wanted before I got my red-golden. Yes, if they kept him in a cage, then he might be socially awkward, but that might be a blessing if it keeps him from being as aggressive as most.
OK, Phil IS pretty dang aggressive. First he attacked the go-cart then the kids in the go cart. Man, 13-14 years old boys aren't very brave this was really funny until Phil came after me. The only difference is I'm not affraid of him, my steer was walking next to me and put his nose down to get a closer look at Phil this spoked the pheasant but he couldn't get away because he was caught between the pig pen and the steer. My place has been taken over by a medium sized bird with a screw loose.
Lisa
Actually he looks just like that. The picture I took was just really close up so you could see the red on his face. Did you read my post just above yours? He runs AT us he does that wing thing to me. Anyway, I think he could do with a little less testosterone. Thats what I get for laughing at the kids.
Are the colors right in your photo ?
I noticed the head on yours is more blue than green.
Hey 1lisac: Can you put him in with a banty hen? Would they mate? Sorry but I can't help but laugh at his antics. Either a screw loose or an ingrown feather. LOL
There are a number of subspecies of ring neck pheasants.
Sorry Lisa: In your first post you listed ten animals, and poultry. "Thats a ZOO" LOL Haystack
In my first post I forgot to list the 3 pet rats and the rabbit. I'm actually have my zoo keepers certification so maybe this is a zoo right, now it feels like a circus.
CountryGardens-the next time he attacks me I will look at the color of the feathers on his face. I heard him calling this morning but I didn't go and look for him.
Haystack-I don't think there is such thing as a chicken pheasant cross (hybrid).
CountryGarden-I took a close look at Phil and your right his head is blue not green. I don't think he "from the wild" he is WAY too use to people. He picked a fight with the peacock. Petey just walked up to look at him and he started going after him. No bloodshed though Petey just jumped over him, then walked away.
Hopefully Phil will learn his place ASAP!!!
He will be fine. We have a lot of space and all my critters get along. He is really funny though because he puts so much energy into being "tough" and the other animals just look at him. I really enjoy watching the animals they have taught me a lot.
Heeheehee....lotsa tough guys get that...;-)
Lisa: I can tell you are the right one to own Phil, Keep us posted, keep us laughing. Is this Lisa' Phunny Farm. LOL Haystack
LMAO. Watch him around your hens though, unless you like them bald : )
