K, y'all, My 'High Fragrance" Camellia has just bloomed and smells absolutely wonderful (I'd have to describe it as soft jasmine like) and true I did have to stick my nose into it, but hey, it's just one bloom so far! ( I just added all the info I could find to PlantFiles so it should be up soon.) WOW, that was quick! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/180740/
So....naturally I did a bit of exploring and came across this site: http://www.camelliashop.com/Fragrant_Camellias_s/4.htm
Looks like you can get another $10 discount if you purchase 4 or more. After smelling "Sweet Emily Kate" last year, she's on my wish list and "Magnolia Moon" looks rather interesting also.
Would anyone be interested in getting another discount? Keep in mind that these are only 4" pots. I also have no experience with this company, does anyone else? Is this a Deal or No Deal?

Fragrant Camellias-Deal or No Deal?
Gee, guess it must be "no deal", lol. For those of you who don't think they are fragrant enough should vist a camellia garden when in full bloom!
I love Camellias. 'High Fragrance' is one I would love to have, also. I think $10.00 is a GREAT DEAL!!! I think I may order one also. I have one that is fragrant. I'm not sure what it is, but it sure is pretty. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/942169/
The fragrance seems to last for a short period of time, while the bloom lasts much longer in this one. Please post on how long the fragrance lasts in yours. Camellias are such a welcome bloom during the winter when most everything else is not blooming. The fragrance is really incredible to go with these winter beauties. I just bought 3 more yesterday.
beautiful Violabird, I'd heard they are fragrant but thought it was just advertising.....glad to have your comments. I have one Camelia that does well in my garden, I may just have to put one of those fragrant ones on my wishlist.
That is a nice size bloom. For a small bush, you are getting quite a few blooms.
I claim ignorance on Camellias as I've never "owned" one...very pretty though
I have some but none are fragrant. have not stuck my nose right to the flowers, though.
Gee Nery, I thought you had "Kramers Supreme" or did someone else?
As far as fragrance, I had it up to yesterday--the bloom fell off last night due to dogs, squirrels or rain--can't tell which, bloom still looks good. Have 5 more buds on this small one.
Here is a shot of my bigger one in the ground, it has a least 20 buds on it and is about 4 feet now. This may be a good test as to whether the scent will carry.
I do have KS, is it supposed to be frag? didn't know that. If yes, wondering if I have to get close to the flower--I haven't done that. Now I'm curious.
"Kramer’s Supreme. - Never has there been a more aptly named camellia. The Kramer Brothers Nursery in California produced many good camellias, but we consider this the best. This is one of those shrubs so handsome of foliage and strong of growth that even if it never bloomed, it would still be useful. Flowers are a unique shade of red, large and peony form. Fragrant!"
Do sniff and let us know. Just like the Wild Azaleas, 1 scented bloom do not a fragrant wafting bush make. Vigorous growers like yours and mine should grow quickly into fragrant bushes--they had one called "Fragrant Pink" at the Camellia Garden everywhere and you sure could smell it from afar.
I am trying very hard to make an evergreen room to contain all my fragrants and trap the scents like the English Walled Gardens did--still have a long way to go with such a big yard :(
I was at a WM nursery yesterday and they had some KS in bloom. I stuck my nose right to the flower and yes, there was a pleasant frag. but very light.
I think I have a little bit of trouble categorizing plants as fragrant if I have to stick my nose right into the bloom. It would be physically very cumbersome for me to get down on my knees and my nose into viola blooms, for example, for the pleasure of their fragrance. Plus I am mildly concerned that a bee might be in the bloom doing its thing and suddenly getting up my nose. It's called gardening paranoia. Fragrance has to knock me in the head (nose) for it to be considered fragrant.
Having said that, stick-your-nose-in-the-bloom fragrance should not be discounted. A garden full of these is still a delicious place to be.
Agree w/Nery....I much prefer the wafting scents of any blooms...guess I'm just lazy...but I don't want to have to put out additional effort (other then growing) to enjoy their scent.
I just found this fragrant forum after a few year on Daves. Perfect tming too, as I have the house full of camelias. NONE of course with fragrance. I did not know they existed. I would be more than willing to give those a try. Actually, Im dying to try them.
Feel free to Dmail on how to obtain these.
Just added this forum to my watch list, just never knew it was here.
My favorite place to hang out in VA. Bch is the Azeala gardens there. They have a huge rose garden, but in Feb/March, when nothing else is blooming, the place is just full of huge old camelias in full bloom. Moved to Roanoke, No camelias.
The firs time I flewinto va.bch. The azelas were in full bloom, the trees. It was the prettiest thing I ever saw coming in for a landing, colors everywhere on the ground, like landing in a painting.
Pam - big ole welcome to you!! Glad you found the forum...great bunch of folks here - you'll enjoy it, I'm sure!!!
Hello Pam, did you see the link I had above for the $10 fragrant camellias?
You all also need to visit one of the gardens in the Camellia Trail, click this link and enter your zip for the nearest garden http://www.americancamellias.org/display.aspx?catid=4
And another listing of vendors http://www.americancamellias.org/display.aspx?catid=5,133
I didnt find a vendor in our area, but I stumbled on to an article an waxing camelias. Im so excited at the thought. Will tyr my first tomorrow, maybe can get the hang of it while the bushes are full. Wonder if that works on other flowers. Always learning.
Waxing Camellias? Please lead me to the link! I just happen to have boxes of scented wax....!

Not sure if this will work, but you can be assured Im going to try to work on the technique while I still have the flowers.
Sounds a little tricky, which is fine. I like learning something that is different. NOW, if I cant ever get it right, well, I dont want to think about tht, Im going to try.

Interesting. I used the method to paint silk roses and some came out really well and really did look like porcelain and still smell good. Naturally I cannot find a photo.
Please post your results!
Vi,
I went to a nursery in Pensacola Saturday and they had a bunch of camellias in this one section. Well, of course I had to start looking and reading the tags. I ended up buying the LAST (making it more urgent, we all know) 'High Fragrance' in a 3 gallon pot. It is blooming away. The blooms are a nice light scent and oh so pretty. I've already got it planted after much thought on where. (How about here....no over there....well maybe...) Thanks for info you started on this thread about it. I really love it!
Pam
Glad to enable you Pam, lol. I got the last one last year too-- after looking at every tag twice! I can't wait till Saturday when I go to the Camellia Festival, so far, a group of us are planning the visit.

Vi, thank you so much for the tour......I enjoyed visiting again. I also entered "your world" and had it full screen to watch.............what a treat that was!!! Would love to visit sometime.
Sharon
Thanks y'all. Sharon, you're welcome anytime. Wouldn't you like to go on a buggy ride with Leesa? We're thinking of a lazy Sunday tour of town when spring hits. Check your mail.
