Can you figure out if a bird did this?

Beachwood, NJ(Zone 6b)

I recently found this hole in my lighthouse out front. Do you think a bird or some other critter made it? Thanks, GM

Woodpecker of some sort. Maybe making a roost hole, or because it sounded hollow when tapped, it thought there might be woodworm to eat inside.

Maybe you'll have baby woodpeckers this spring? :-)

Could you imagine!!!
That would be so cool!!!

I guess you'd forgive the damage if you had a woodpecker family... :-)

You might check around your lighthouse and make sure you have no other sign of wood-boring insects. You can actually hear carpenter ants and bees chewing inside the wood if they're present, although they might not be active until warmer weather.

No big whoop the lighthouse is only wood! I am aware of the eastern carpenter bee chomping sound. They have made lots o holes in my wood sided house!
