Hoya Against The Ice

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

I thought this photo was kind of neat. A couple of pots of Hoya cv. Iris Marie silhouetted against some icicles. Here were the temperatures in Waterville, VT on three consecutive mornings this week. These are not wind chill, but actual temperatures taken from two thermometers to verify: negative 12, negative 22 and negative 13 degrees. This morning it is zero, and it feels balmy.

Another view. The red blossom in the background is a geranium that I snapped a cutting from on November 15th, because I thought it was a miracle that the plant was not frozen to death at least a month prior to that date. Now it is happily brighting my bedroom.

Amazing image of the icicles, Doug! I can't begin to even imagine temps that cold, much less experience them. C'mon down south and thaw out!!!
Stay warm,

Last photo with flash.

On top of all my other plant challenges, I just suffered a lone warrior, renegade, mouse attack. He ate all the new growth on several Hoyas and after getting on my plant shelf ( over 3 1/2 feet high), climbed 20 inches to the to of H. Lobbi and chewed off all of the newly opened flowers. As of Thursday morning, the mouse is no longer with us. RIP, but I just could not let this kind of behavior go on. You do have to hand it to mice however; they are amazing athletes.

Thanks Barb,

I wish I could just beam myself there like Scottie on Star Trek, but alas I can not.

Doug, great photos! I can't believe I used to live there. !994 it was 41 below, that did me in. LOL
How do you keep your plants & pots are so clean?

Great photos Doug, and I love your little mouse story. It is truly amazing the damage that those little boogers can do. But to eat newly opened lobbii flowers is simply unconscionable. I hope you had him executed by firing squad!

We've just ended a nasty cold snap up here ... of course the "warmer" weather's brought about 18" of snow ...

My plants and I use the same method to stay clean - regular showers :)

Christine,

You and I have very similar growing conditions exept you have so much more wonderful natural light with your great windows. I always pay special attention to your posts, because we live in similar environments, and I'm always trying to learn what can I do better.

That mouse was incredible; he also managed to evade my two cats while wrecking his Hoya havoc.

I love the scenery...inside as well as outside! I vacationed in Stowe, VT last February to get my fill of snow skiing...they had over 2 feet that week. I love the option to visit and then come home to sunny SRQ, FL.
Never thought about mice eating my hoyas?...or anythig for that fact.

Joni

Wow, that's one brave ex-mouse!

The natural light is now amplified 100,000% by reflecting off of the snow ... at least on days when we have sun....

And we are complaining because the wind is coming off the mountain (with snow) and it is currently 55deg.!!! I have all my clothes on plus a polarfleece robe and I am freezing. Of course, the house is like living outdoors with a roof. I love 'visiting' snow.

Great scenery but even greater looking hoyas!

Susan
