IT WAS 32 BELOW 0 THIS MORNING,MY CHICKENS WERE FINE WITH THERE HEAT LAMP ON,THERE WATER WAS FROZE A LITTLE EVEN WITH THE LIGHT BULB ON.
HOW COLD WAS IT AT YOUR PLACE THIS MORNING?
Ouch! It got into the 20s here. C-c-c-c-c-c-cold! But at least it was above zero!
It was 20 here at my house and i had a 100 watt bulb on my rabbits and their water still froze.
My pigeons with the babys had a 100 watt over their water and it froze moved up to 150 and will see if that works.
Its 11:44Am here and the temp is 30 now hope it goes up to above freezing or i will have to go do water again :(
It amazes me that my doves don't get cold there was a pair trying to take a bath in the dish of water i gave them!
17* here, downright toasty! =0)
And now it's a sweltering 43*... I'm going outside!
2 below --they were running around my yard in the sunshine, just like always--they seem to prefer walking on grass to frozen dirt, mud, or gravel...more comfy somehow.
It was 23 here this morning. I don't have my chickens yet, but one of the cows had a calf last night. Both seem to be OK. I was too cold and it was too dark to get a picture. Maybe tomorrow. BRRRR!
Midday, it's mid-50's... nearly bikini weather!
(((Now where did I put that?)))
Freak weather all around....
22 below when I got up. And get this: I picked this winter to see whether I could get by without gas heat or hot water.
I threw two comforters over my beehive even though the bees probably are fine.
-8 here last night it is at 0 now coldest we have seen it here in preveous years is -12.
Set to be around 12 tonight I pray my pigeon babys make it through this ***please***
It was 0 here this morning and I'm struggling to keep the poultry waterer from freezing. Even the yard hydrant wasn't working when I went outside, although it will probably be operable again later today. I bought one of those heated waterers which works well, except that it's poorly designed for filling. You have to turn it upside down and fill it through a stoppered hole in the bottom, and then tip it back over, trying to avoid losing too much of the water through the feeder holes in the bottom tray or else you have to do the whole thing all over again. I wonder who thought of that???
We keep the water and food outside, but we have to set up a new chicken house in the spring because ours is dilapidated, so I'm trying to come up with ways around some of the hassles we've been having keeping them fed and watered and I'm looking for ideas.
it hit -7 today i lost 2 white silkies, 1-d'uccle x favorolles and a polish. can't keep the waterers from freezeing here either. this really stinks i'm so heart broken. everyone else seams fine we r doing all we can but with unheated coops it limits us on things we can do. to my surprise haven't lost 1 serama yet they seem to be the hardiest. i pray the rest pull through all this it is so cold here almost noone is outside anywhere. i can't wait for this bad weather to be through and i hope it is soon....
SO SORRY TO HEAR OF YOUR LOSS SILKIECHICK.IT WAS 27 BELOW HERE THIS MORNING,I HAVE A 250 WATT RED HEAT LAMP GOING 27-7 RIGHT NOW AND IT WAS 12 DEGREES IN THE COOP THIS MORNING.MY CHICKENS ARE HARDY FOR THIS COLD WEATHER,MY WATER WAS A LITTLE CHILLED MY SET UP FOR THE WATER IS GREAT,IF I PUT A BIGGER BULB IN IT PROBABLY KEEP THE WATER FROM CHILLING BUT THIS WEATHER WILL BE OVER IN A FEW DAYS.AT LEAST THE WIND ISN`T BLOWING.MY COOP IS NOT INSULATED EITHER BUT ITS VERY SMALL,
SUPPOSE TO BE 24-7 NOT 27-7
Silkie, I am so sorry fou your loss. It is so hard when they pass so sudden. I sure do wish you the best. {{HUGS}}
It is sure cold here to. today is better than yesterday. Its about 10 degrees without windchill. Not sure with the windchill. Feels really bad though. My poor babies have not been out in days. Makes me sad for them.. This is the coldest winter in 5 years here. It can wait more than 5 for the next one like it if you ask me. ;)
silkie i am sorry for your loss..it was -12 at my house this morning..and it sure didnt warm up too much today..DH went to feed and water the girls for me. and the eggs he brought down 4 of them were frozen..well if the dummies would lay them in the nest boxes instead of the floor..i have about 4 of them that wont go in the boxes..they must be the retarded ones..hehe..so those eggs i will make scrambled eggs tomorrow..
again silkie i am sorry for your loss..i hope the weather warms up for you..we CAN hope spring comes soon!!
thank you all, it has gone up to 10 now. they were dummies and decided to stay out in the pens alone stead of going inside. everyone that has been staying inside is doing fine. it is suppost to warm a little tomarrow i hope so. the fuel pump on my fil truck went and dh has to go put the new one in asap. i just hope the weather stays around 10 or higher if so they will be fine. waterers were freezeing like crazy today and fast. prayers to everyone and their flocks we all get through this soon.
Silkie, I hope the worst is over and I'm so sorry for your losses.
Our temps went up to 18 today-heatwave! Thankfully no wind so it wasn't too bad. I opened the small chicken door on the coop today and everyone came running out. Guess they were getting abit stir crazy.
One of the EE pullets was sitting on at the top of the ramp with her head inside the coop. Their coop door faces south so with the sun hitting her it was warming up. Wish I had my camara! Everytime I went in and out of the person door, she would pull her head out and look at me dreamily but she didn't move an inch. She stayed there for over an hour just sunning herself.
Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer with another storm coming. Looks like us coastal folks are getting 0-2 inches of snow then turning to rain. Just hope it doesn't freeze into another ice rink! I'm getting too old to skate to the coops. :-)
We had our really cold weather about 2 weeks ago, and it is now getting to you people on East Coast. It is just down to mid 20s here at night and into high 20s daytimes. My chicken house is insulated with two heat lamps 24-7. The one over the water is only 24" above the water and seems to keep water from freezing except when down tosingle digits. I opened the small door between the house and yard for a couple off hours this afternoon. The guineas were especially happy to get out to fresh air for a bit. The banty hens have quit laying. They are not too happy to have to stay inside, but there is about 10" of crusted snow where snow hasn't had more snow thrown on top.
It has been very low thick fog every day all day and nite all week. The hoarfrost is more than 1/2" now since there hasn't been any melting or wind. Very pretty.
I hope your weather moderates for you and your chickens sake. Good warming.

cndy Wonderful expresssion picture of the baby
Awww! Too Cute!
Well, Newport and Narragansett are getting the rain now and we are getting 6"!
of snow, I mean! Aww, bugger. Is it spring, yet?
Awww, what an angel!! Not a snow angel though. Baby spring! yeah!
We're at 28 this morning with an additional 5-6 inches of snow. Sun's supposed to come out for a brief period today and get to 36. Yeah above freezing. This will be the warmest day of the week however, and more snow for the end of the week. Cleared an area for the chickens in their yard and they're already out pecking around.
How's everyone else doing?
We are in the 40's this morning but we will be back down to 24 Tues. Stupid weather.
its 5 here this morning..we did get about another 7" of snow yesterday..geez, this is gonna be a looooong winter..and its only january..but what choice do we have, we just have to take what the good lord gives us..
About 33 here and due to be in the 20s tonight "Dito on the stupid weather Wren"
We've got our 1st half inch of snow...
SNOW! Lordy i hope it don't snow thats all i need is snow......
Still have the snow. We have about a foot right now. I am strike from watching the weather since I am not leaving the house today anyway. Its almost 20 though. Looks like another warm one where the chickens can get some sun. Its a good day!!!
There is more than 10 inches of crusted snow where it hasn't been disturbed. Of course deeper along the paths. I let the guineas and chickens out of chicken house into the enclosed yard a couple of times, snow was pretty much shoveled out of the yard area, only 8 x 8feet. the guineas were really happy to get out, the chickens thought it was too cold and mostly stayed inside the hen house.
It was 23 degrees this morning and still foggy, has been very low heavy fog since Jan. 11 and I am tired of it. weatherman predicting the fog will lift sometime this week, then will probably snow. Guess I would rather have the fog.

It was 23* here this morning, and going into the low 60's. Yesterday was glorious once it warmed up. Only little patches of snow left in the shade of the scrub oaks.
It is warming up during the day here but still frost in the mornings. The wind was coming from the south yesterday and that always brings some warm air with it. I noticed a couple of hawks and our resident kestral couple working the back of the pasture this morning and saw a caracara had something in the front of the pasture when I left for work. The field rats must be out and about this morning!
PS to silkiechick: A belated sorry for your losses. I was brought up with livestock but never got the hang of just thinking of them AS livestock. I know how hard it is to let them go.
