Sharp-shinned Hawk today

Marlton, NJ

Today when I was on my way out to fill the bird feeders I spotted this handsome sharp-shinned hawk on the arbor. I slowly backed up going inside the house to get some shots.

I noticed he had some blood around his beak area so he had eaten earlier but it did not appear he was able to dine in my yard today.

Yes this waiting for dinner can be tiring business; first time I've seen one yawn. :-)

I love Raptors!

Pelle, what fantastic pix of a beautiful bird. All good but I love the one of the Hawk yawning. Preparing for a post-prandial nap.

Pelle - I had a sharpie at my birdbath this morning. It also made a couple circles
around a caged-in groundfeeding area I've set up (I didn't see any other birds in
there at the time). The feeder area was loaded with woodpecker seed. Do hawks
ever eat other stuff or are they strictly carnivores? Any idea? I thought it may have
been considering supplementing it's diet becaude it's bitter cold today. Do ya
think?

Hi carol, You have a heated bird bath I presume. The Sharpie was drinking from it?

I just got a heated bird bath for Christmas and I would love to see a raptor at it.

Need to get the outside electric fixed first. :-)

I love raptors too, The other night, While going by a favorite pondsite, I seen a Great Horned Owl in the tree, I got out to take a closer look, And at about 20 ft away, It showed no signs of being worried that I was there, After a short amount of time , It flew off to another tree and I got in the truck and drove down to where it flew, Once again, It didn't fly off and had no fear of me being there, I didn't have my camera with me ( Darn it!) , But, Took a chance and went home and got it and went back to where he was, But, Of course, He was gone! I feel that the place where he was might be a favorite roosting site for prey so I'm going to go back and check from time to time and see if he's there, Next time I'll be sure to have my camera with me ! I hate it when theres a chance to get a great shot of a raptor ( especially a night one) and I miss it because I didn't bring my camera! ~ And It's always nice to see when someone doesn't miss out, Like your photos above, I really enjoyed them!

Very rare for raptors to drink - they get all the water they need from their food.

Very rare indeed but it does happen! I saw one sitting in a watering bowl last February (25th.) It was eight in the morning and it sat there for 10 minutes according to my camera stamp. Posting 2 pictures with Pelle's kind permission. Only time I've seen this.

I only saw him get a drink once. He just sat there soaking his feet most of the time.
As a side note I've read that Roadrunners rarely drink from yard water sources, getting their water from the food they eat, but I see them drinking all the time at this bowl.
Thank you Pelle ☺

Pelle, I didn't even say how great your series is! Each pose is wonderfully caught & I love the snowflakes too.

That's really neat Angele! I love it when you can catch them doing something new.
Nice pics!

I only saw the sharpie take 1 (long) drink. It mostly just sat on the edge of the bowl. And yes, it is a
heated bath.
