Help the tip of my degu's tail just fell off!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

OK, so I have no idea how this happened and I'm well aware that this is not a poultry, nor livestock, question, but the tip of my degu's tail just fell off. I may have caught it in the cage door, but nothing noticeable. Maybe they were chewing on each other???

what would you do? There is a little pink thing left. Would you leave it alone and see if the skin and fur grows back or would you try to put the tip back on or clip it back to the fur? I'll see if I can find my camera and take a picture.

Patch, are you out there. I know you have lots of little creature friends... any thoughts?

Pet forum was helpful: check out http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/943145/ if you want to see what's going on with his tail. :-(

Good you got an answer is he still doing good and hate to ask whats a degu?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

He seems to be doing OK. I'll be shopping for a new cage for him tonight. I think his tail caught on a piece of jaded plastic he had chewed. I knew he'd need a new cage, but just not this fast.

Poor baby, I feel so bad that he lost the tip of his tail. It didn't seem to bother him too much, but still... :*-(

A degu is a small rodent. It kinda looks like a cross between a gerbil and a chinchilla. Check out this link for more information. http://degoe.tripod.com/engels/e_info.html

Thats very cute it does look like a chinchilla.

I hope his little tail gets better♥

Just in case you were curious, I've updated the other thread with pictures of him and his new Ritz Carlton of a cage.... the Mrs. wants to know why one of them didn't do it sooner to guilt me into buying a bigger cage. ha!

I accidentally degloved the end of my cat's tail once. He was behind me and I didn't realize it. Stepped back with my heavy boots on and came down on the end of his tail. He yowled and took off, which left about the last inch of skin and fur (he had long hair) under my boot. Felt horrible, but when I went to find him, he purred and didn't seem to be in any pain. The vet said that degloving happens more often than you'd think, and all sorts of feral or barn cats end up with bony bits sticking out the ends of their tails. He snipped off the bony bits for my cat and sewed the skin over the end and that was that. Since the cat had long hair, you couldn't really tell anything had happened.

i adopted a cat once who had the longest tail imaginable. about a week later it was lying fossilized on the kitchen floor -- turns out that it had been nearly severed and just took its time drying up & falling off.

Egads! I bet that was a bit of a shock!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

oh my goodness, poor kitty-cat!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Oh, she made do with the stub. She'd flip that thing all over the place when she was in a feisty mood.

My beagle has a 90 kink in the tip of his tail. It always makes me think that someone slammed it in a door when he was a pup or something...

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

My second belgian tervuren had a kink in his tail but he inherited it as his grandmother had one to. LOL

it held still enough for you to feel it? you describe the current (not sure if that's the 2nd) as a Tasmanian devil! can't imagine you getting a hold of the tail! hehe

OH Lazy: I must ask you for forgivness, down south they are called degu's, up north we call them rodents mice. OOP' that was a slip, I'm sorry but I hate rodents and after clicking on that Hyperlink you gave us. It's a mouse. I so respect you but I can't help myself. Tell me thats not just a stinky ole mouse. Please convince me. Haystack

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL! Its definitely a rodent, but not a mouse. I had to laugh when I read the book about them... they are the pest of Chilean farmers and we choose to domesticate them. HA! They are awfully cute... not nearly as cute without it's fluffy little tail, tho! ;-)

Oh Lazy Ladies, so sorry I haven't been on here! I'm sure he's doing fine, even though it seems quite tramatic. Often small rodents lose their tails due to children handling them wrong, my daughter had this experience with one of her gerbils. All you need to do is stop the bleeding. It will heal up fine on its own. Once again, sorry I wasn't here sooner, but I'm sure your little degu is ok : ) by the way, where are the pics of your new pet?

Ferndale, WA

Hi Lazy: Did you know that for many many years we never had possum' in Wa. It's true they were transfered here from the south, Now they are everywhere. I guess what i'm trying to say is if I find any Little Degu' running around up here I will WATER BOARD and interrogate them til they confess from whence they came, Then I will have to pay you a visit. LOL My two kitties bring home mice (DEGU') all the time. DISGUSTING. Haystack

LOL - point taken

I've informed them there will be no escaping. they just stared at me blankly and continued to gnaw on the steel bars which entrap them. HA!
