I read that Canna Lilies could be happy set into a pond in their pot.
Has anyone ever done this and do they thrive?
Canna Lily in a pond
mine just barely survived, no blooms
Oh oh...not such a good idea then.
I just bought one today called Princess Di.
Grey green leaves slighty striped. It is supposed to get a creamy flower with a red throat..we'll have to wait till next year probably..but it was on sale at Home Depot for only $4.00. I thought I could put it in the litle pond till I have to take the tuber out to save over the winter.
Starzz, I have a Tropicanna canna in the pond now and it has done great and will be blooming any day now and this is in partial sun. Two years ago, I grew a green leaf/yellow flower one in the pond and it also did great and bloomed. I left it in over the winter and it did not survive. So,I'll remove this one from the pond before winter and store inside....it's too special to lose.

Hmmmmm....
well now..what should I do..there's no sense in putting this plant in he ground now. Maybe I will put it on the shelf of the pond so it gets water but not soaked..
Water is at a premium here..I have a shallow well and we haven't had hardly any rain this summer.
I too read somewhere cannas could be put in very shallow water in ponds....I havent been bold enough to test the theory yet. After reading this Im unsure of what to do.
I know that I gave one to Jim and his did great and bloomed. Mine never grew one inch after I put it in there. we both had them in mostly sun. Go figure:) Try it with a cheaper canna. I didn't kill mine, but it will be back in the ground soon.
Here in Washington state, I grow most of my cannas in water and they do great - this is the first time I have ever had blooms on them.

Hey Ya'll,
There are water canna's you can buy that grow in water only...Have seen this on Home & Garden channel... Don't know the name but maybe you could do some research om them!
Cheers!
i have one in a pond at the moment, but the ammount of water they like i will try a few more next year,C Tropicana
does well in water, so does C musifolia, C indica purpurea, they have been water logged for ages and seem to love it, they are over six feet tall.
The variegated canna with yellow stripes on green, bright orange flower, (Canna X generalis), does well in shallow water as well as in the ground. It depends on the canna as to how well it will tolerate being "wet" constantly. If uncertain, I would try a division of one before risking the whole thing. I don't think most cannas will do well in water, but many will tolerate it.

going to give this a try only have a water barrell one flowing in the other just have to make room
I have a bengal tiger canna in my pond, the water covers the whole pot ,and it bloomed most of the summer! They also seem to do well in my leach feild, but its such a pain digging them out of there!!!
There's a recent addition to the photo threads with cannas blooming in a pond
