Orphaned Whippet, seeking advice

Napoleon, OH

We recently rescued an altered 13 month old Whippet, Pixie. Her mama had to surrender her when she moved from a different state and into a job and apartment situation which would not allow her to provide for Pixie as much as she deserved. She was on the way to the humane society and we intercepted and introduced her into our household.

We currently have a 6 year old Chocolate Lab= Ziggy. A 4 year old Golden Retriever/Rotty mix= Zoey. A 2 year old Yellow Lab (2nd birthday yesterday) = Molly. We also have 4 indoor cats, ages 6 to 16+ years.

All our pups had been crate trained as is Pixie. Also all are leash trained but very spoiled.

We've been reading and researching and reading even more to gain as much knowledge of this breed of dog. After gathering as much as we could the former owner send us the folder of medical records for Pixie. Her primary breed is listed on all the forms as "Catahoula Leopard dog" with secondary breed listed as "Greyhound". Does she appear to be Whippet, Geryhound or Catahoula? We're so confused!! lol

Pixie has a wonderful disposition except she is so high strung that it makes the older girls a little nervous. She and Molly play for hours on end while Zig and Zoe only join in randomly and for only a few seconds at a time. She gets very vocal when she wants attention and will do everything in her power to curl up in your lap. Problems arise at bedtime when ALL four dogs want to join DH and me in bed. lol! We sleep on the very outside edges and the girls take over the entire middle of the bed!

We live on a dead end country road that is rarely traveled and our property is more than 5 acres. We have fencing on the back and one side of the property but really need to enclose the entire acreage in order to feel secure in allowing her to run free! Across the road from our house is a canal and then a half mile of river bottom farmland. We are very close to the river and worry about the dogs going across to hunt. There's a lot of wildlife critters to tempt the girls so we definitely want to do a lot of training for Pixie to respond to her commands.

It's our intent to formally adopt Pixie into our household but would appreciate any information and or advice about blending this family and working with these breeds.

Info, suggestions, advice, any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
~Dawn
