Help with gingers

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I need to seperate and move the gingers.
What is the best time to do so? Fall or spring? Do most of them require full sun to bloom to their peak potential, or are some more tolerant to shade?
How big do I want the clump to get before i divide it?
Any help would be appreciated.
If the type matters, i will post and list the names.
thanks
jen

MSJen, do you leave your gingers in the ground there in Zone 8? I have a few that took all summer to get established here (zone 6/7) and I'd hate to disturb them now. They are shell ginger, from Florida. Thanks for any help. John
